An NHS nurse was disciplined after accidentally addressing a transgender paedophile as “Mr”.
The nurse, Jennifer Melle, 40, was treating the patient—who was from a high-security men’s prison—at St Helier Hospital in Carshalton, Surrey. During an aggressive tirade, the patient called Ms Melle a “n—–” three times.
But in October 2024, it was Ms Melle who was investigated and formally disciplined by the hospital. She was issued a final written warning and referred to the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
With the help of the Christian Legal Centre, she is now bringing a legal claim against Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust for harassment, discrimination, and breaches of her human rights.

Apologies, it isn’t in Jersey though! St Helier Hospital in Surrey.

Yeah, that was confusing me, as Jersey isn't NHS. (Although the General Hospital in St Helier is state run and free at the point of use)

Is there a Jersey Health Service @nocoolnamesleft? How does the government work there? Sorry, just interested!

The hospital is run by the government, so pretty much NHS equivalent, but the GPs are private, though I believe quite a lot of people can claim the cost back from the government.

To be fair, although (with certain exceptions), one has to pay to see a GP in Jersey, you can often get an appointment the same day, and prescriptions are (usually) free. I am astonished when I see on MN that people have to phone at 8am in the hope of getting an appointment with a doctor a few weeks down the line. The downside of living on a island is that some treatments, such a radiotherapy, are not available meaning that patients have to travel to the mainland for treatment. And it is best not to mention the word hospital to islanders, as there is a long running saga and very expensive waste of taxpayers money associated with the word.

I'd say the problem is less with planned treatment (things like radiotherapy) than unanticipated emergency care. When I was there, babies needing neonatal intensive care had to be flown off the island by one of the then two paediatric consultants, and a team used to come out from Southampton in a helicopter for paediatric intensive care transfers. Some of them could get a bit hairy. Proper remote working.

That’s St Helier Hospital in London I think

Ereshkigalangcleg · 31/03/2025 13:44

Yes I realised straight after I posted the thread.

Unfortunately later posts still seem to think it’s a hospital in Jersey!

The second post refers to the mistake, such as it is, and subsequent posts are just chat 😊

A nurse who was suspended after refusing to use a transgender patient’s preferred pronouns has had her disciplinary hearing ‘abruptly cancelled’.
Jeniffer Melle was scheduled to face a hearing at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust this week, but was told it could not go ahead due to “unforeseen circumstances” and the unavailability of a panel member.
Melle has worked for the hospital for 12 years and was suspended in April 2025 after she spoke to the media about an experience of being racially abused by a transgender patient and then being investigated by her employer.
The patient, a convicted paedophile who was born male but identifies as a woman, called Melle the N-word several times, she told the interviewer. This was in response to being called ‘Mr X’, and he needed to be restrained by guards.
... it is dragging Jennifer through months of uncertainty. We will continue to hold the Trust to account and ensure that nothing is done in the dark. Transparency is essential, and this case will set a precedent for how the NHS handles conflicts between gender ideology and biological reality.”
