One woman murdered and another woman seriously wounded by a lone male with a "hatred of women"

IwantToRetire · 29/03/2025 03:37

In a way I dont wont to name or talk about the murderer.

I want to think about these two women who were just sitting on a beach enjoying sitting by a fire at night.

A bit like the sisters playing with torch light in a park a few years ago.

And a lone male randomly shattered those shared moments of happiness between women.

RIP Amie Gray and hoping Leanne Miles makes a full recovery.

I know, it’s grimly familiar and I felt exactly the same. The photo that other press sites have been using was so nice, the women looked so genuinely happy together. I guess that’s what the murderer want to shatter.

Glad you posted this OP as I was contemplating doing so too. It just seems like there's a story about male hatred and violence towards women and girls every few days at the moment.

I grew up in the 70s and 80s and took part in Reclaim the Night marches when I was a student. I really did think things were changing for the better but it seems as if there's more and more misogyny everywhere I look at the moment.

It makes me sad and angry in equal measure.

Edited to add: Sending solidarity to the families of both victims and hoping Leanne makes a full recovery.

Yes, a tragic story.

RIP Amie Gray.

Probably hated lesbians too. How many more of these males are there?

Probably hated lesbians too. How many more of these males are there?

Depressingly, millions.
At school we were "advised" to walk in groups of 3 or 4 if we dared set foot out of the school gates; now at uni I'm told (by men!) that I'm "too lovely"* to risk walking alone once it gets dark.
On both, I told the ppl saying it that they should be stopping MEN from moving around because they are causing the problems.
"Oh but that would be unfair on the men who AREN'T causing problems", a woman told me!

*Sorry I know I'm likely to be told off (again) for suggesting I'm attractive - unfortunately the consensus seems to be that I am!

I'm sorry this isn't the right place to share this article, and I am thinking about Amie and Leanne, but I just need to share with people who understand.

This was just reported in my local paper

https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/man-headbutted-girlfriend-sank-teeth-31300795?int_source=nba

  1. The guy got a suspended sentence so no prison time
  2. He'd already broken a non-molestation order AFTER the attack.

"The defendant then began shouting and screaming saying 'there's been another male in this address, this relationship isn't working'. He then punched a hole in a cupboard door and grabbed her by her hair, dragging her off the sofa. He headbutted and punched her to the face, kneed her in the stomach and bit the top of her head.
Slack then forced two of his fingers down the woman's throat as she struggled to breathe. The victim then managed to run upstairs and locked herself in a bedroom. Following the assault, Slack was made subject of a non-molestation order, but breached it on May 15, 2023 when he posted something "aimed" at the victim on Instagram.

Shaun Routledge, defending, said Slack was of previous good character and had not been in trouble since the offence. He said: "He has a good work ethic and comes from a supportive family. He was due to work an early shift at the supermarket and an argument got completely out of control.
"He apologises for his behaviour and shows remorse. He got carried away and lost it."
Judge Nathan Adams sentenced Slack to eight months prison, suspended for 18 months and ordered him to complete 30 rehabilitation days. He must also carry out 100 hours of unpaid work."

What a piece of shit. But I despise the judge as much as I despise the offender in this case. He should not have got away with a slap on the wrist for this terrifying and potentially lethal assault.

I bet he would be in jail if he’d done that to a man.

I used to keep wondering why this kind of act isn’t classed as terrorism.

And then it dawned on me that it’s because the patterns of male behaviour that it sits on a spectrum with are so widespread and commonplace. Not extremism.

There is a strong correlation between dv and terrorism. See Joan Smith's book 'Home grown'.

I've thought similar for a long time, Sarah Everard was very attractive and there was a young Asian lady (sorry, brain fog - her name won't come to me) who the killer obliterated her face. It's as if they hate anything beautiful and want to destroy them / it.

I was 13 and at school and a Red Underwing moth landed near me, it was scuttling and fluttering along the ground and I was following, watching it. A boy jumped and crushed it, I was really upset and angry and hit him.

I got in trouble and the teacher said, when I explain, "What's the fucking matter with you? It was just a butterfly."

I think that they're so twisted up inside that they want to destroy anything lovely.

IwantToRetire · 30/03/2025 02:26

Sadly the police (and Labour I think?) are saying it is a form of terrorism. But dont think it has helped address let alone combat it.

Policing has now ensured that VAWG is officially classed as a national threat and a refreshed national framework has brought the police response to VAWG in line with counter-terrorism and serious and organised crime.

Partly because it is a crime of the "lone actor". Some man walking on his own wearing a hoodie or whatever, isn't exactly a clear indicator.

But on the other hand the Met has no problem with disproportionately stopping young black men, maybe now is the time to recognise the thread from young white men.

Although obviously in an ideal world we should be looking at ways to stop this attitude even starting.

On the Radio 4 Any Answers one caller in was a women who claimed she wasn't just a feminist but an actual Women's Liberationist and then went on to say it was because too much had been done to feminise (I think she used another word) education, aspirations, and so on.

And as usual effectively blaming women because they had joined forces, and through WLM and others made (on one level) society give women more space and a bit of a voice.

I dont think anyone suggested that now is the time for men to work towards creating sons, boyfriends, fathers etc., that can accept that women are their equals and they are no more automatically the first in every thing.

Combatting VAWG

Violence against women and girls has received more attention over the last year, with police forces and governments highlighting the issue and pledging to do more. Earlier this year, police warned of an epidemic of violence against women and girls and...

Just want to say that in creating the thread I in no way underestimate the women who face violence in their home, some of whom are then killed or they committ suicide.

It was more a reflection on what seems to be some horrible pattern.

And I suppose the terrible tradegy in Southport was part of this.

I wonder if you're thinking of Zara Aleena? Another senseless killing by a man who thought he was entitled to take what he wanted and destroy her once he was finished.

MarieDeGournay · 30/03/2025 11:29

I'm surprised, but in a positive way [to the extent that anything about this case can be 'positive' - deepest sympathy to the bereaved] that the media are reporting it so clearly as a hate crime against women.

Here in Ireland the term 'gender-based violence' has taken over, women's refuges are now just 'refuges', any time Women's Aid is mentioned, Men's Aid [probably run by women🙄] has to be hastily added.
Even women who have survived high-profile cases of male violence carefully add '...and men too' or 'we must teach boys.... and girls too' to their statements, even they haven't earned the right to say 'men do this to women because we are women'.

It seems to be 'bad form' here to point out that the vast majority of violent abusers are men, who abuse and kill women and children, so non-sex-specific words are used instead, or awkwardly-crowbarred-in references to 'of course men too..'

The media in the UK seem to be stronger about naming male violence when it happens, naming the targets as women, and identifying it as the huge social problem it is.

We need a crying or raging reaction option. "Agree" just isn't strong enough.

Thanks, Zara Aleen was exactly who I was thinking of.

IwantToRetire · 31/03/2025 00:49

that the media are reporting it so clearly as a hate crime against women

Its not the media that is saying this.

They are just reporting the Judge's comments.

Which is I think a bit of a step forward. It isn't that long ago that a comment like that wouldn't have been made. And in the past there would somehow be an implication that either the women had brought it on itself or the murder deserved sympathy for their "issues".

It did make me wonder whether Judges did and do know this, but it is only now that politicians and the police are saying it they feel able to make it a factor in the court room process.

So, although it has taken decades, thanks to all the women who have campaigned on this issue.

In what is such an horrendous circumstance one small positive.
