Sent a letter - £10 if you participate. They want blood taking - and the locations will cost me at least half of that tenner to get to!

First few questions of the questionnaire are

What sex were you registered with at birth?
A question about gender identity will follow later in the questionnaire
Female
Male
Intersex
Prefer not to answer

Select the option that best describes your current gender identity
Select one from the list Man Woman Gender fluid Nonbinary/third gender I don't identify with any option provided Prefer not to answer

Do you identify as trans or do you have a trans history?
Yes
No
Prefer not to answer

Which of the following best describes your sexual orientation?
Select one from the list Straight/heterosexual Gay or lesbian Bisexual Asexual Pansexual Other sexual orientation not listed Prefer not to answer

It is in partnership with the NHS.
What a load of nonsense to fill the first bit of a form with.

I'm glad I put the letter in the bin!

Chersfrozenface · 28/03/2025 14:18

Oh FGS.

For starters, "intersex". There is no third sex and every human is either male or female, including those with a DSD.

No-one can be non-binary, everyone is either male or female.

Once again, there is no third sex, even if you label it "third gender".

Any "research" based on these ludicrous questions is completely worthless. It can have no value in the field of health, where actual human bodies and biological sex are what matters.

It's a waste of the funding money and of the researchers' and participants' time. Both money and time could be put to better use.

IANAPh - I Am Not A Phlebotomist - but I'm pretty sure that 'Preferred Not To Say' is not a useful category for samples intended for scientific research..

Thanks for flagging this - never intended to participate, but it further underlines the extent to which the NHS is captured. Intersex?!? Sigh.

Just to say OFH is not the NHS. It is separately funded and has very strong links with industry. The NHS link was "encouraged" by the last (Tory) government, to boost participation rates.

Oh no, I realised that - but the letter has “in partnership with NHS” all over it. It’s either an open endorsement of some rather reality-lite research by the NHS, or someone in the NHS did not do their due diligence on what the OFH was about, neither of which cast the NHS in a very flattering light.

Not remotely surprising, just further confirmation of the state of things…

I rolled my eyes heavily but did it anyway.

BaileySharp · 31/03/2025 00:49

I suspect they don't care much at all about gender identity but they include it to try to get a honest answer about sex (or at least an indication that the sex declared is unreliable). I can't be shire though

Thelnebriati · 31/03/2025 09:03

I do as many medical trials as I can, and will look at this one - at least they have the sex and gender identity questions separate.

ThreeWordHarpy · 31/03/2025 10:57

I did it - at least they’re making an effort to differentiate between sex and gender, I presume to try and get the most accurate information from people who identify as something other than their biological sex.

what’s more concerning to me is that the data I got during my visit showed I had high cholesterol and I needed to see my GP. GP ordered a blood test and said my cholesterol was totally fine, the number was half that of the one given by the Future Health (total 4.3 vs 7.9). Apparently the little portable machines that they use are nowhere near as accurate as the proper NHS labs. So I question the value of the study if that’s the quality of the data they’re getting.

Except that "sex" includes "intersex". What value will there be to any data they collect from people who tick "intersex"?
