Did anyone listen to this on Radio 4 last night? https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001yghw

I have my thoughts but don't want to spoil it if you haven't listened yet.

Michael Cashman tells the story behind the culture war over sex education.

Hmm. I gave up paying any attention to this dangerous man when he started agitating for people to "push back" against adults discussing safeguarding children. Some of us who were teaching children and sex education during and after Section 28 have some very different stories to tell compared to this privileged man.

Why does that not surprise me.

Thank you for the link to the other thread @MrsOvertonsWindow , I hadn't seen that one.

It really doesn't seem to matter how much is said and done in plain sight.

It grieves me that some of the loudest voices "representing" the LGB community and telling the important stories from back then are the likes of Cashman, Tatchell etc with their misogyny on full display. That's why it's been a relief to see the arrival of the LGB Alliance, the Gay Mens Network etc who don't weaponise children but are determined to ensure that children and safeguarded and same sex attraction protected.

Can you tell us some of your experiences of teaching during and after section 28 please? It is invariably stated to have been awful and women calling for safeguarding now are often accused of being as bad as those who brought in section 28. I’m interested to hear whether the situation is actually more nuanced.

Do you think Section 28 was right? Or that it was flawed by homophobia but partly happened bc of genuine safeguarding concerns?
