Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I’ve decided to call myself a Quasi Intersectional Feminist (QuIF)

I just thought I’d share how I’ve started describing myself to people when the subject of feminism comes up - obviously it’s slightly tongue-in-cheek but I amused myself when I saw I could create the acronym QuIF (or maybe QuIFF if I expand the term to say ‘Quasi Intersectional Female Feminist’ 🙂 )

Basically, I agree with the ideas of Crenshaw on intersectionality (race, sex, sexuality, disability, poverty etc…) EXCEPT when the intersection is with men. I’m sure there are other elements that get lumped in with intersectionality that I don’t entirely agree with ie. ideas around sex work - but it’ll do for me for now.

I know I should just say I’m a Feminist and we shouldn’t have to redefine ourselves at all. But humour me please, I live in Scotland and am a woman.

I believe what you do and I'm a real intersectional feminist.

GIF works, genuine intersectional feminist.

So no men....

Branks · 21/03/2025 23:36

So has intersectional feminism been hijacked? Was it intended to exclude men?

Well duh, surely so. It was about thinking about different types of women and how they interact and the struggles different parts of the Venn diagram have. Men are not in that conversation, even if they pretend to be women.

It must be hard being a woman in Scotland right now, you have my sympathy.

IFF also works: Intersectional Female Feminist (or if and only if in maths terms, which seems relevant).

BeyondHumanKenDoll · 22/03/2025 06:33

Sex can't intersect with sex. You can't have a male woman.

So I agree with you on that but I would just call myself an intersectional feminist.

Branks · 22/03/2025 14:46

All the intersectional feminists I’ve encountered include trans women in their feminism? Hence my reluctance to embrace that particular label.

I don't want to detail the thread asking for long explanations - but if anyone has a link for a decent explanation on intersectionality or can point in the right direction so I can can have a read then I'd be grateful if not too much trouble.

My own view is that if it's possible to shoehorn an amusing acronym into a situation then why not 😄

@Mancala
A pretty good basic explanation is this “Time Magazine” interview from 2020 with Kimberlé Crenshaw, the woman who coined the term. True (ie not including males let alone centring them, as is usually demanded!) intersectional feminism is desperately important; but it being twisted in the way it has been serves only to disadvantage women.

I think because it is yet another word that has been hijacked by you know who.

WarriorN · 22/03/2025 20:24

I do like QUif Grin
