'The Liberal Democrats have been told to stop discriminating against gender-critical women by their chief executive. Mike Dixon has written to constituency chairs across the country to remind them of equality laws after the party lost a number of legal battles with their members.'

Article from the Telegraph.

From the article: In response, the Liberal Democrat Christian Forum (LDCF) noted: “It is a sad indictment of the democratic health of the Liberal Democrats that party HQ has to remind activists to be Liberal.”

About time - but when will they also admit they were wrong over the CASS report and drop their support for harming children? A vote for the Liberals now is a vote for child abuse.

A keen reminder though that this topic does bring out the totalitarianism and authoritarianism in those who demand that female people allow male people access to single sex provision and to believe the impossible- that humans can change sex.

FlowchartRequired · 17/03/2025 09:25

Yes, definitely more the Authoritarian Omnicause Party and less the Liberal Democrats in some cases.

Where does that leave ex-members like us who had their memberships cancelled after raising concerns? Will they be reaching out to us to apologise or bring us back into the fold? Will they repudiate previous statements by Lib Dem ministers, peers and leaders?

In my case, I wrote to the membership secretary following the statement by Baroness Featherstone in Feb 2019 (at the time a party spokesman, peer and former minister) asking if the following was official party policy or if there was still room in the party for me as a GC feminist:

"I also have a message to those people who believe they can restrict trans women's rights, deny their human rights or exclude them from women-only spaces in the name of feminists. You are not feminists. Your views are not welcome in the Liberal Democrats."

And the next I heard was "sorry you're leaving us, we have cancelled your direct debit..."

That is a good question to ask Mike Dixon.

Maybe Hayley Dixon (the author of the Telegraph article) would like to know about that situation?

teentantrums · 17/03/2025 09:33

@Xiaoxiong My elderly mother - a lifelong campaigner for the LibDems (since before they added the "Dem"!) - was told that she was not welcome because she said she didnt like announcing her pronouns. They owe women a lot of apologies.

It would be a bold move for organisations to do that and I would admire them enormously.

I don’t anticipate that it would ever happen.

Xiaoxiong · 17/03/2025 09:37

@RethinkingLife yes I agree...my questions are mostly rhetorical/shouting into the void...

Could you write and ask them? The way they've treated their supporters is shocking.

“some broad principles that will help you avoid legal action”.

They're going to stop discriminating just to avoid getting done for it. Not because it's the morally right thing to do.

How very depressing.

ArabellaScott · 17/03/2025 10:14

'He noted that online they “cannot exclude someone from a party group or remove posts solely because of their protected beliefs” even if they are seen as offensive.'

Tolerate women through gritted teeth because its illegal to discriminate

I have a female LIB dem MP who I corresponded with for a while over trans issues. I felt like she was pretty on board with what I was saying but couldn't be seen to go against party lines. I had a lib dem canvasser at the door at the last election and he said he privately agreed with me but he couldn't say anything. The whole machinery of the LIB dems is operating like the US Democrats and refusing to listen.

Helleofabore · 17/03/2025 10:56

Do you know what happens when accurate communication is left to stand without deletion though? More people who aren’t fully invested in perpetuating a belief based on falsity read it and start to think about it. While it is disappointing that they are only motivated by the potential legal action, it gives women the voice they need.

It means that women are not excluded or expelled. And that they can vote and bring issues to meetings. And the more the totalitarian actions try to shut down those voices, the more people see when they previously just ignored it as a ‘non issue.’

I am pleased to see your posting. I am still a paid up member of the LibDems but have sincerely wondered whether I should cancel my membership after the Natalie Bird case. I want to see my subs spent on fighting political causes and holding incompetent politicians to account - I don't want to see them wasting my subs on pursuing Natalie Bird and others for making a statement of fact.

"I also have a message to those people who believe they can restrict trans women's rights, deny their human rights or exclude them from women-only spaces in the name of feminists. You are not feminists. Your views are not welcome in the Liberal Democrats."

I have a message for you too Baroness Featherstone. Trans women are not women and they do not belong in women's spaces, regardless of whether we consider ourselves feminists or not.

I was also taught as a child that with rights came responsibilities - trans women do not have any right to ride roughshod over the dignity and safety of women.

Exactly the same for me. Lynne Featherstone's statement was the last straw and I cancelled my membership after having been a Liberal/LibDem voter for almost 50 years. I wish I could believe things have changed but I remain to be convinced.

The ferrets are reversing folks. Only people are asking the ferrets nasty questions about what their plans are.

Lib Dem conference this weekend is going to be be facing some of the reality they are trying to avoid. Just by women talking about the Cass Review.

Liberal Voice for Women
One week tonight we're hosting our first fringe event within Lib Dem
conference. It is now over 11 months since the Cass Review was published and the Lib Dems have not take an official position. So we are bringing experts including Dr David Bell to conference to help members make up their own minds.

Friday March 21st 8 pm
The Cass Review – One Year On
The four-year Cass Review fundamentally changed the discussion regarding healthcare for gender questioning children. Our speakers include health professionals and LGB rights campaigners to discuss why the Review was so necessary and what’s next.
Harrogate Convention Centre, Queen’s Suite: Meeting Room 7
We will shortly be circulating a link for zoom tickets for those who cannot be there in person or are outside the Lib Dems. Watch this space!

Remember in the May elections don't forget to ask WHY the Lib Dems are incapable of speaking on a major health issue?

Oh, for sure. We started winning as soon as people conceded that 'no debate' was unfair, and that women should actually have a chance to speak out on issues that concern them.

Once people actually start listening and engaging, they generally end up agreeing with women's very reasonable demands and beliefs.

It's just grating.
