Testosterone effects on women

I am looking for a one-page summary of the impacts of testosterone on women. I have "Time to Think" by Hannah Barnes, which mentions testosterone impacts on young women treated by GIDS. Also "Unfair Play" by Sharron Davies, in which she describes the effects of anabolic steroids on female East German athletes. There is a 1-hour interview with Elaine Miller on "Gender: a Wider Lens".
Is there a summary available - a five minute read key facts type thing?
Also, I remember a video of Elaine Miller in conversation with a detransitioner about testosterone, which I thought would be more engaging for a teenage girl than the "Wider Lens" interview. I can't find it - not sure what platform it was on. Can anyone point me to it?
TIA

Probably not what you are exactly looking for but some research from last year.

One of the things I remember that Jamie the Whistleblower (USA) highlighted, that many of the young women she was involved with knew little about and found disturbing, was bottom growth. T can cause the clitoris to grow (up to 5cm I think). I’m sure for some this can be embarrassing when it comes to sexual relationships.

Bumping to reiterate, i am looking for a really short summary prepared by someone authoritative.

The Mayo Clinic has a page for women considering testosterone as part of gender transition. The risks listed are probably not enough to put someone off. Oddly it doesn't mention osteoporosis under risks but does say bone health will need to be monitored. I thought it was pretty much proven that it causes bone density loss so it's odd it isn't listed.

There's some interesting information if you google 'testosterone women's bodybuilding', including scientific studies. I haven't yet found exactly what you're looking for but it might be there with further searching.

What's interesting to note is that the impact of T on bodybuilders is seen through very different lens and considered more generally harmful than desirable. The deep voice, enlarged clitoris, hair growth and lack of period are not desirable to bodybuilders, but usually are to transmen.

I should imagine both are equally unhappy though with the kidney damage, high cholesterol and vaginal atrophy.

Well a young relative of mine has been on transman doses of testosterone for about 5 years - since the age of 17. Visible effects so far: major weight gain, weird voice and male pattern baldness.

I fear for their future bone and liver health. Too much testosterone in women can lead to liver cancer, I gather.

Is the voice really croaky? That's not listed on anything I've seen but a teenager I know has a voice like that, and i don't know if she is trying to pitch it below her range, or what.

The Mayo page is quite confusing. It reads as if it was written bit by bit. There is a blunt list of irreversible changes but there are a lot of side effects not mentioned, such as incontinence (unless I missed it).

Not a summary but I think risk of incontinence is recognised as high and would be a mortifying side effect pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38662108/

Scout2016 · 08/03/2025 21:50

Buck Angel has been really frank about some side effects- virginal atrophy and skeletal issues, and has spoken about kidney problems, higher cholesterol... he's done lots of interviews with others who have suffered too I think. Buck isn't to everyone's taste but has been on testosterone a long time and there aren't many decent long term studies out there, as far as I'm aware.

Wow that's quite a read. I hadn't heard of Buck Angel before, thanks.
