Given the ongoing revelations about misconduct in the Met, I saw this.

Independent Panel Member to serve on Police Misconduct Panels

London £357 per day
This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in one of the most important aspects of policing in the capital.
London is a fantastic place, a global city of extraordinary talent, diversity and complexity with the MPS serving nine million Londoners across 620 square miles and the millions of commuters and visitors to the city. The Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime, headed by the Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime (DMPC) on behalf of the Mayor of London, is responsible for setting policing and crime priorities for London, holding the Metropolitan Police Commissioner to account and working with partners to ensure that crime goes down and criminal justice outcomes are improved.

The Metropolitan Police Commissioner is committed to renewing policing by consent and will deliver more trust, less crime and high standards, whilst responding to Baroness Casey’s report, the HMICFRS Engage process and increase public confidence in policing in London. The Metropolitan Police Commissioner is committed to renewing policing by consent and will deliver more trust, less crime and high standards, whilst responding to Baroness Casey’s report, the HMICFRS Engage process and increase public confidence in policing in London. MOPAC is also committed to ensuring that Londoner’s are served by an efficient and effective police force. Transparent, fair and robust arrangements for police officer discipline are an important way of inspiring public confidence in the high professional standards and ethical values of our police.

This is an opportunity to be involved in one of the most important responsibilities in policing – by providing greater transparency and independence whilst upholding the high professional standards the public expects from our police service. You will support misconduct panels for the Metropolitan Police Service, the City of London Police, and the Ministry of Defence Police. These panels preside over serious misconduct cases, in what is an important aspect of the disciplinary rules that govern the police.

The role of Independent Panel Member is open to individuals who can demonstrate strong analytical and communication skills, self-confidence and the ability to take a balanced, open minded and objective approach to the issues presented.

Applicants must currently live in London and be able to demonstrate a good understanding of the diverse and complex nature of London and its various communities. Candidates must also have an understanding of the need for high standards of conduct in the police service and a commitment to fairness and equality. Previous experience of participating in disciplinary panels, and an understanding of employment law are both desirable.
Independent Panel Members will attend hearings as and when required - the time commitment is variable but is likely to consist of between 6-10 hearings per year with hearings generally lasting between four to seven days.

The qualities sought include integrity and independence of mind, commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, sound judgement and objective approach to issues presented.

Independent Panel Member will need to be available to attend frequent Metropolitan Police misconduct hearings in London, and every now and then, hearings for the City of London Police and the Ministry of Defence Police.

Successful candidates will be required to undergo security vetting and mandatory training. Serving or former personnel of MOPAC, Office of Police and Crime Commissioners or police forces should not apply. Candidates will not be able to serve as a magistrate while undertaking the IPM role.

The locations for hearings are Sutton, Hammersmith and Fulham and Southwark. Candidates must be willing to travel to each of these locations and any other location within the Metropolitan Police District which may be used to facilitate future hearings. The City of London Police and Ministry of Defence Police will have different locations, to be advised.

Appointments will be made on a five-year term, with the possibility of a second term. We may consider further terms as approved locally. Security clearance and attendance at training events is a mandatory condition of appointment for these posts.

The closing date for completed applications is 12 noon on Monday 24th March
For more information please see our microsite: [I removed links in case it looked like a job posting rather than an appeal to Mumsnetters who might be interested. ]
Interview selection panels will be scheduled during week commencing 28th April and 2nd May

…..commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion,…

Well, I’m not too sure I’d be suitable unless they can explain exactly what is meant by that section.

This is precisely what they need to be challenged on - diversity of thought and an understanding of women’s rights. They need women to apply.

The 2nd page of the application form is diversity monitoring....2nd question is asking if you are currently undergoing gender reassignment and which gender you are intending to acquire. Oh dear.....

MarjorieDanvers · 08/03/2025 19:43

First page and first question asks what sex you are M/F!

I do agree that there are some odd (and inappropriate) bits to the form so downhill after that!

I meet all the criteria for the role so I could apply ………

I dont live in London and it's maybe 6-10 weeks commitment - so not many people going to be able to do it. Otherwise I'd take one for the team and say I was transitioning from male to female. Now that you can fake birth certificates and passports I could maybe get away with that? Do you have to divulge past identities? if not maybe I could be non binary. If lesbians dont mind I'd also be willing to identify as lesbian.

RethinkingLife · 09/03/2025 12:46

I wish I lived in London. I would relish the opportunity to serve.

Yes. I put in the name of police forces with misconduct panel and a number turned up. There is a distinction between the legally qualified members and independent panel members. I mention this because the initialisms that are in use can be LQM / LQPM or IPM.

Some police forces have information on their websites and other places, it’s Police and Crime Commissioner.

Thanks, @RethinkingLife
I think mumsnetters could make a difference on a lot of these types of bodies. It’s just a shame so many of us are hampered by caring responsibilities etc from getting stuck in and sorting them all out!

RethinkingLife · 13/03/2025 08:14

A friend and I were discussing this around the time of 2024’s Police and Crime Commissioner elections. She discovered that her local Police Advisory Group is chaired by a transwoman who considers GC reviews as adjacent to terrorism.

No surprise that it is the same police force convened a gold group for Alison Pearson and visited her home re her tweet. (Some details are hazy. )

I would be very interested and (at least on paper) very suitable, but like most people who work full-time or have other responsibilities, couldn’t give the time they’re looking for.

I would happily drop some of the reviews that I do (I am losing faith in evidence-based medicine and journals) and use that time for this.

Of course, I am no longer caring for young children.

Probably meant "white middle aged actual women" needn't bother to apply 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
