Spiked gets it, and understands Mumsnet's important role with their 'authentic thoughts' and MN's organic debate vs Stonewall's false presentation of the trans issues.

OP posts:
WearyLady · 02/03/2025 16:20

I liked the final comment, along the lines of GC feminists on TERF island being accused of receiving funding from the US religious right when now we know who was really receiving US funding (I.e. the likes of Stonewall).

And there they were, thinking MN was boring chat about breast feeding and the menopause while politely knitting, when it was a hotbed of sedition 😁

WarriorN · 02/03/2025 17:36

"Authentic thoughts" 😆

I'm getting French Revolution knitting vibes.

Come At Me Bring It GIF by Game of Thrones

Agreed. Obviously not read any of Sarah Pedersen’s work about Mumsnet.

RayonSunrise · 02/03/2025 21:23

Quite amazing to see how Spiked's position on feminism has evolved since they realised how angry women are over TRA overreach.

Abhannmor · 02/03/2025 21:39

Indeed. I recall Brendan O Neill on the Moral Maze saying that feminism was started to advocate for women but now now it only seems ' to police men'.
But then most of the Spiked mob are ex Revolutionary Communist Party. They're good at debate and love an argument. RCP alumni are everywhere lately.
Munira Mirza ex advisor to Boris Johnson. Baroness Claire Fox- Brexit Party! Kenan Malik , my personal favourite as he has a certain consistency and hasn't shot off to the libertarian right or whatever.

My son said he thought the name should change as people would think it was just for people who wanted to talk about babies. "Exactly," I said.

Appalonia · 02/03/2025 22:40

Thanks OP, I'll watch that later, love Spiked.

OvaHere · 02/03/2025 22:48

Brendan O'Neill is genuinely one of the best writers on this topic. I think he's probably just a talented writer overall but his flair certainly lends itself to this subject.

Well I thought the same. I steered clear of Mumsnet for over a decade because I'm not a mum. I had no idea until recently you didn't have to be one-and that there was a GCfeminist board. I'm sure I'm not the only woman who thought/thinks it just a parenting forum

Same here. I was nearly 60 before I realised it was a place for child-free me, too.

Same for me. MN has been quite a revelation over the last 9 months or so!

Yep.

As someone on MN years ago said 'I came for the baby advice and stayed for the feminism'.

In a very un-Mnetty way i have confessed to being an avid MNetter IRL and have sent many of my feminist friends in this direction.

To be fair, almost every time I see it mentioned in other media, it's referred to as 'the parenting forum Mumsnet'
I had no reason to come here

AlexaAdventuress · 03/03/2025 07:50

Yes, I have no children, nor any wish to have them. Mumsnet material kept showing up in my Google searches concerning feminist issues so eventually I decided to join in and make the odd observation myself. I'm not as regular or diligent a contributor as many here, but I certanly appreciate being able to pop in and read people's thoughts. It's at least as good as a lot of professional stuff you see from e.g. Reduxx or Julie Bindel et al. That's not to put the latter down, but rather to underline the quality of thinking that goes into a lot of the stuff here!

WarriorN · 03/03/2025 07:50

It's interesting how the woman refers to types of feminism and the "down to earth feminism" found on mumsnet.

It really is essentially a type of radical feminism whereby female rights and needs are championed and supported.

Yes! They tried to recruit me back in the 90s - I bought a copy of LM (remember when they used to sell it on the street like the Big Issue?) and a woman wanted to come to my flat to talk to me about the party. Amazing to see all the old alumni of that project now embedded throughout politics.

WarriorN · 03/03/2025 09:01

Don't know much about the party but it's refreshing to see people who'd be classed as leftists being so bloody sensible

They do seem to be very pro debate and discussion; Baroness Clare Fox certainly champions that even if I don't totally agree with her perspectives on GI. It's the authoritarian lack of debate that that got us into this mess

BonniePrincessBilly · 03/03/2025 09:04

Another who came by Mumsnet care of the rollback of women's rights and the anti-safeguarding of children. No kids of my own but landed around 2017/18, care of the gender madness, and never looked back. Always point people to these boards IRL.

PenneyFouryourthoughts · 03/03/2025 09:22

All this begs the question: What should Mumsnet be called now? if it's not solely a parenting website.

I joined when DD was small and it proved useful, but it also showed me what an abusive relationship looked like, and a lot of other random things.

Teribus21 · 03/03/2025 09:28

I can see an advantage in remaining semi undercover which is that we don’t attract too much attention from the anti feminists and TRAs.

Yay!
I came to Mumsnet for the feminism and stayed for that and the daft jokes. Especially at the Mumsnet pub the Bluestocking.

I only dipped in when there was something that hit the news (penis beaker Grin ) but I was looking something up and Google directed me to MN threads. Then I started reading AIBU, found a feminism forum and the rest is history. Like so many others, I didn't realise there were bits of MN that could be for the child-free!
