Story in the Telegraph.
Police have apologised over an investigation they mounted into a Newcastle United fan banned by the football club after expressing gender-critical views on social media.
Northumbria Police have told <a class="break-all" href="https://archive.ph/o/gK3hi/www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/06/08/gender-critical-newcastle-fan-linzi-smith-sues-police/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Linzi Smith that crucial elements of their investigation into claims she had committed a hate crime were not acceptable.
It said that while there was no misconduct by its officers, the way they handled her case and similar hate crime reports in future should be subject to further training.

Well done Linzi! She is still suing Newcastle United.

I hope she wins!

This is also a good summary from Fair Cop (on Nitter)

This is the story we were going to break next week. A dozen officers colluded to make-up a victim. This was not a single officer getting it wrong. A Superintendent, a Detective Inspector, and around 10 other officers conspired and justified the action. A sergeant indirectly linked Linzi’s tweets to the murder of Brianna Ghey. And the force’s LGBT officer was all over the investigation, from start to end. @northumbriapol is rotten from the head down.

So glad to hear this - but part of me was astonished that they could be so casual about owning up to having got it wrong.

“The police report has been long awaited on my part, and while I feel there are areas that truly vindicate me as an individual and in relation to the stance I take around gender ideology, I can’t help but feel let down and quite frightened that there were so many failings from so many police officers that led to me even finding myself in that situation in the first place.”

Unbelievable behaviour by the police. There was never a victim, only a hypothetical victim. And there has to be a victim. That seems pretty basic.

MarieDeGournay · 01/03/2025 22:19

Well done Linzi, it took a lot of courage to take on the police like you did!

And there never would have been a victim.

Believing sex is biological is "worthy of respect" as a recent court case pointed out.

So having that belief doesn't make you a threat to anyone so there never was nor ever could be a victim.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 02/03/2025 00:27

The belief itself is WORIADS but not all manifestations of it necessarily will be protected. Arguably there should be a high bar though, if you are using that to discriminate against people with that protected characteristic of philosophical belief.

Bunpea · 02/03/2025 11:07

So the Police have issued an apology. Is that the end of it for them? No other consequences? There should be a deterrent for this kind of outrageous police behaviour and waste of public resource.

How can the Police say there was no misconduct by their officers?

HeatonGrov · 02/03/2025 11:31

In addition to the awful impact this will have had on Linzi, this kind of unacceptable police action gives weight to the arguments made by JD Vance and the like about freedom of speech in the UK.

I agree. Well done Linzi.

And the police ‘apology’ is insultingly casual. It said that while there was no misconduct by its officers, the way they handled her case and similar hate crime reports in future should be subject to further training.

How much training do you need in order not to make things up?

It's no small thing to take on the police, it must have been a very frightening experience for her.

Arran2024 · 02/03/2025 12:20

The whole idea of hate crimes is badly understood generally, but you would expect the police to get it right. There has to be a crime, and then the hate element is an extra factor on top. You can't just be offended or upset.

thenoisiesttermagant · 02/03/2025 13:59

The police lied, and targeted one lone woman in order to shore up an unscientific ideology.

This surely must be illegal? If lying to the police is illegal surely the police lying themselves must be illegal?

So they can engage in Stasi like behaviour and then just say 'oops' when someone points it out and that's it?

This is where the government must step in. I can't be the only one wondering whether there are Wayne Couzen type characters in the police up and down the country making shit up to target completely innocent women they want to abuse, and to take up police time and resources to distract from their crimes.

Let's not forget Couzens committed the criminal offence of indecent exposure right before he escalated to murder, which was reported to the police who DID NOTHING. Had that been investigated by the police and taken forward, he may not have been free to kill.

The way the police are behaving here should be criminal. About time those abusing their position of public authority and trust lost their jobs.

Igmum · 02/03/2025 15:03

Good good good and about time too. Well done Linzi.

zanahoria · 02/03/2025 20:08

Newcastle United are owned by Saudi Arabia

So hardly surprising they are not in favour of women's rights

Fenlandia · 02/03/2025 20:45

Incredible how many cops were involved in this. Crime must be very low in Northumbria!

How can the Police say there was no misconduct by their officers?

All officers involved in this quite intentional deception should be dismissed.

Honesty, integrity and transparency must be the foundation of any police investigation.

Northumberland Police Service has demonstrated they are anything but. They are an utter disgrace.
