LOJ Mantrumming about us meanies. Misrepresenting virtually everything and ignoring stuff he can't rebuff (everything). It's idiots like this with the moral certainty and superiority that enabled Trump. 'You're going to lose'. Don't think so mate.

"it will nag at you, at your souls" 😂

what a melodramatic arse!

Apollo441 · 26/02/2025 16:13

Funnilly enough not allowing paraphillic men into women's changing rooms does not nag at my soul. Is there something wrong with me?

"I'm talking to those for whom this has become an obsession."

Look in the mirror, Owen.

MarieDeGournay · 26/02/2025 16:35

Unlike many on here, I don't know Owen Jones, I've never read him except when quoted here, and I certainly had no idea what he looked like or how he spoke. Thank you for the intro, Apollo441.

Gosh he is melodramatic, isn't he? and OTT and worryingly worked up about people who disagree with him.

He says we are like Millenarians, but he is the one preaching Hellfire and Damnation to us Sinners with that glee in the detail of the eternal suffering that reminds me of somebody somewhere.. ...... oh yes, it's the preacher at the spiritual retreat in 'Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man' -

They will remember all this and loathe themselves and their sins. For how miserable will all those pleasures seem to the soul condemned to suffer in hellfire for ages and ages. How they will rage and fume to think that they have lost the bliss of heaven for the dross of earth, for a few pieces of metal, for vain honours, for bodily comforts, for a tingling of the nerves. They will repent indeed... justice insists that the understanding of those miserable wretches be fixed continually on the sins of which they were guilty, ... They will behold their sins in all their foulness and repent but it will be too late..

He's missed his vocation, hasn't he - he's wasted as a journalist😏

ArabellaScott · 26/02/2025 16:40

I remember the version of this at 1.5 speed. It was greatly improved.

RoyalCorgi · 26/02/2025 16:46

I think you're spot on there, Marie. In fact, he reminds me not only of the preacher in Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man but of Amos Starkadder, the doom-and-gloom preacher in Cold Comfort Farm. Flora describes his face as "wearing an expression of the most profound loathing and contempt, mingled with a divine sorrow and pity."

It's uncanny, frankly.

Imagine modelling your later career on Katie Hopkins' successes whilst simultaneously claiming the moral high ground and expecting to be taken seriously.

That's LOJ.

lechiffre55 · 26/02/2025 16:56

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

That second picture where LOJ is looking towards the heavens in smug anticipation of his sainthood is all the funnier for the look of Alastair Campbell's face behind him. It's got this "Just wait until you discover you shit your pants Owen." vibe to it.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 26/02/2025 16:58

Oh Lord is he still twatting on?? Even the guardian must be embarrassed by now!

(obvs I’m joking the guardian doesn’t know the meaning of the word embarrassed)

He’s still angry he couldn’t find a womb to rent.

Chuchoter · 26/02/2025 17:31

Little Owen Jones has always been utterly repellent in his way of thinking.

I think the Hellfire Preacher is a perennial human type. Unlike the Tyrant, the HP doesn't have the worldly power to crush people who dare to disagree with him, so tries to torment and frighten them psychologically instead.

If he (or she) doesn't have a religion to HP about, an ideology is the next best thing, with ending up, conscience-stricken, OTWSOH, as a substitute for Hell.

I’ve literally just finished reading CCF and am so pleased to see this very applicable quote! And thanks to @RoyalCorgi for pointing out the uncanny resemblance! I’d forgotten just how annoying and self-righteous LOJ is.

Could LOJ be cured of his ways by being offered 'one o' they Ford vans'?

Have I remembered CCFarm correctly? It's decades since I read it, but it's very memorableSmile

Daleksatemyshed · 26/02/2025 17:59

You're right @MarieDeGournay he really is very hyped up and very angry - it's rare nowadays to see such fire and brimstone preaching. Does anyone else remember the Reverend Cain from Poltergeist?

Yes, you have remembered rightly. It didn't exactly cure him, though, just got him off the premises!
