The Sun use correct sex pronouns for a transwoman

They also refer to him as 'the weirdo', repeatedly, but the point I want to make is that I wonder if we are seeing more media outlets refusing to go along with IPSO's line on pronouns.

Oddball and creep make an appearance too

LadyEstrellaDellaheugh · 25/02/2025 16:18

I suppose using the words "weirdo" and "oddball" mean a reduction is the use of he/him which I can only see they used at the start.

At the end of it all this person is clearly mentally unwell and I don't agree with the use of weirdo or oddball. But he him would have been sufficient surelyal!

PencilForScale · 25/02/2025 16:20

I am pleased they pointed out that's a wig as well.

RethinkingLife · 25/02/2025 16:26

Was that at the close of 2024? Interesting to know when they started to use sex pronouns in such cases.

Oh! Well spotted. I missed the date.

Holy strawman, BiggerBoat.

I can't see any problem with calling people who spray urine on children oddballs TBH.

Whoknew24 · 25/02/2025 16:44

He is a weirdo and an oddball with convictions going back years. So the use of those words is appropriate . His mother said the trans things is further attention seeking she said never in his life had he indicated any such thing.

You mean honest and labelling unreasonable behaviour? Yup.

This is someone who sprayed urine from a bottle all over a child's face, body and clothing and then physically attacked him with a bicycle chain with a lock on the end.
He also repeatedly sexually harassed young female staff at a clothing store.
Tabloids describing him as a weirdo is probably quite restrained. Do you think they should have been nicer? Why?

lcakethereforeIam · 25/02/2025 17:21

Wtf is he doing in that picture 😳

BiggerBoat1 · 25/02/2025 17:29

This is a horrible human being - no doubt about it. I have no sympathy for this individual and am offering no defense.
My point was that this is not the article to hold up as your example of how the media should be conducting themselves. It reads as if it’s written by an eight year old.

The behaviour is that of an adult male assaulting and harassing women and children. If the Sun are accurately sexing this creep then that's a positive change - and if a Scottish judge is also refusing to pander to the Scottish government's demands that everyone lie about the sex of male predators, then that's also progress.
It's being polite and kind and diplomatic and not speaking honestly that's got society into this current mess and has enabled men like this to run amok with confidence that they'll be pandered to by everyone. No more.

Who said anything of the sort, pal? Try going back and rereading the OP.

Why are you calling me when you’re pal? Not necessary. The whole point of this post is to comment (positively) on the Sun’s reporting. In my opinion this is terrible journalism and there’s nothing to admire. You obviously feel differently. No need to make this personal.

AuntyFunGal · 25/02/2025 18:20

The Sun is pitched to a reading age of about 7/8yrs old. The style is pure tabloid. I have no issue with either. Other publications are available.

You seem to be incapable of reading the OP, apparently wilfully, and are repeatedly putting words in my mouth.

I'll spell it out.

I'm curious whether the IPSO rules on pronouns, which have been challenged by a few newspapers now, are going to see more pushback.

Nowhere in that statement is there any suggestion whatsoever that anyone should aspire to comment positively on the Sun's reporting.

This is comment on news. I read a wide variety of news sources. Comment doesn't equate to approval. Reading a wide variety of news from a wide variety of sources with a wide variety of styles, political leanings, and subjects, and discussing the reporting is not 'admiring' any of the reporting.

It's pure playground level thinking to suggest that anyone who reads a certain paper is somehow contaminated by the source.

“The accused was Francis until very recently - the name given when arrested three months ago was the male name.
“Court staff had to score out that name on the papers and write in Francesca manually.
“It’s a disgusting and highly unusual conviction but it's not the first time Bartkus has been in court”.

This is good to see reported, we are too used to seeing the white washing of previous names and crimes. Not sure why PPs are discussing the standard of journalism? Surely the point of the thread was the wording of this article compared to previous reporting of crimes similar in nature.

ArabellaScott · 25/02/2025 20:06

Yes it was. We've discussed many similar instances, covering the BBC, Spectator, Times, etc, and the IPSO rulings including Juno Dawson's complaint against the Spec.

It's the Sun, it's aimed at a 9 year old reading level: the point highlighted in the op is that its sex realist in use of pronouns, when up until recently this individual would have been given the misleading she/her. I think it was a pretty simple point to comprehend.

NewMarmiteJar · 25/02/2025 22:52

The reporter repeatedly calling him 'the oddball' and 'the weirdo' has properly tickled me, i am sorry it this is terrible I haven't read the currant bun for years!

ArabellaScott · 26/02/2025 12:14

A 2015 article on the same man, when he used the name 'Francis'.
