I’ve not listened yet but it looks like a very in depth investigation.

Most people have listened to it before, but a question to be asked is why is the BBC now spending money on hosting pre-existing podcasts?

It's a bit dubious that they have a deal with Tortoise media who recently bought The Observer.

GriefSubmittedHighways · 21/02/2025 13:31

Why is that dubious? The BBC has for decades commissioned and purchased programmes made by third parties, in addition to making them itself. It's how it operates, surely?

The BBC have always bought media in from external sources. Which I'm very glad about, otherwise I'd of missed out on Buffy, Star Trek and a million other things as a kid.

I hadn’t listened to it and didn’t even know about it until it turned up on sounds.

And the BBC have always bought in external programs. They don’t make every single thing they show.

Yes, I understand that for their TV channels to fill the schedules, but for on-demand podcasts I just don't understand why they need to buy in external content, considering that the other platforms (like Spotify, Apple) are free-to-use in regards to the podcasts.

It's great that it will get a new wider audience. Is that the series that has the horrifying Webberley interview as a postscript?

CheeseChamp · 22/02/2025 10:31

Just listened to the whole thing. It starts strongly but is disappointing in its conclusion about politics having no right to interfere in the godlike right of doctors and only doctors to decide on medical pathways and treatments. Yeah, no. That's where we get shit like leeches and eugenics?

Helen Webberly is an absolute horror show and hard to listen to but my goodness. Great that the BBC have put this on its platform to get it more attention. I wonder how that decision was made.

Indeed the BBC has obligatory quotas for content sourced from external providers. It often exceeds those quotas.

I've just heard the trailer, hadn't come across it before either. I'll be listening if only to get the stats up.

I knew about the podcast but didn't realise it was available on BBC now. Ta.
