Puberty books that aren’t stupid - recommendations please

I’ve got two neurodiverse tweens and struggling to find appropriate books for them - not too grown up and not identity based 🙄

they’re both of an age where they need understanding about their own puberty and urges, but they don’t need to learn much about sex with other people (I appreciate basics need to be covered to learn about puberty!)

One is autistic and gender-non-conforming , and I made a mistake with one book talking about how you can choose whether to be a boy or a girl 🥲 recommendations welcome please.

Look for something that was published and printed at least 15 years ago (beware of updated, recent editions).

Hopefully other posters will be along with specific recommendations soon.

You need the Davida Hartman books
https://amzn.eu/d/0YeWQTZ
Or for boys

Also Milli Hill for periods specifically.

libertineagain · 10/02/2025 21:43

Milly Hill's book - My period is excellent for girls.

I'm also keen to see suggestions for this. I'm nervous of the Davida Hartman ones after seeing her described as "she/her" in her Amazon profile, I haven't read them but it would make me want to check them before buying.

I'm disappointed to hear she states her pronouns but lots of authors do. The books however are brilliant: no gender stuff, clear, concise, and written in a way easy for autistic children to understand. I actually used them as an example of the kind of unambiguous, sexed language needed for PSHE resources when I was talking to my DCs school about it.

(I have 2 autistic teens, one of each variety!)

We have this

A Girl's Guide to Growing Up (My Body's Changing)

The Usborne “What’s Happening to me?” book is very straightforward and matter of fact. There’s a boy version and a girl version.

Just to add, OP, Sex and Gender by Phoebe Rose is also a good book to have, especially for your gender non-conforming tween. You can buy it from the Transgender Trend website. It's more of a booklet really, and explains the difference between sex and gender in a factual & accessible way.

sankacoolrunnings · 10/02/2025 23:06

The add Emily book is good (Peter Andres wife) it does have one small bit that says some people feel like they aren't in the right bodies but not really any detail. But for things like periods and sex it was the best "tone" that I found.

sankacoolrunnings · 10/02/2025 23:06

Dr Emily not add Emily!

Snowyayday · 10/02/2025 23:13

I also chose the Dr Emily Macdonagh - growing up for girls book for my daughter. I really like it.

@QuietlyLurkingintheCorner Thank you that's good to know

Seconded.

This book is excellent. It's been written with autistic children in mind.

My DD9 - ASD and dyslexic - has just started breast budding (this last week so very recent). She is finding it very challenging/uncomfortable so I will check out the ASD books suggested here.

Bell2026 · 16/01/2026 23:16

Isla's World Books, A Girl's Puberty Guide is excellent
