More than 1,000 'top surgeries' a year on the NHS

https://archive.ph/qLvsT more than 1,000 'gender affirming' mastectomies a year on the NHS. This is horrific. Article from the Telegraph. The thought of all those young women mutilating themselves is just appalling. 80 per cent aged between 17-25. This is just nhs figures. The number is likely to be much higher because some do it using private providers. The NHS is currently conducting a 'review' of treatment for gender dysphoria.

In contrast a friend with breast cancer had to fight for double mastectomy instead of single and then lumpectomy for second breast despite oncologist clearly saying chances of reoccurrence were high. Needed counselling for it to be approved. Would never surprise me that she had more hoops to jump through than some of these cases.

When the nhs set up new gender clinics across the country, they included a budget for mastectomies and 'bottom' surgery, so this is intentional and has been planned for a while.

shockeditellyou · 10/02/2025 09:06

I don't believe those numbers. My clinical service, for a condition far more widespread (and lethal) than gender dysphoria, sees a fraction of those referrals each year for our entire region.

Those numbers at best will be for referrals that might include surgery, but I think ultimately the number of procedures will be vastly lower.

This is awful on multiple levels.

why are we prioritising this cosmetic treatment when the NHS is on its knees. When people are struggling to receive truly life changing treatments.

why are we accepting that thousands are needing this gender affirming treatment.

'The data, obtained using freedom of information laws, show that the NHS’s Gender Dysphoria National Referral Support Services (GDNRSS) referred 3,490 women for “masculinising chest surgery” between 2021 and 2023.' You're right that we don't know how many women actually went through with the surgery but it looks like the referrals were specifically for this operation.

Can’t be more horrified at this number of girls potentially maimed. I can’t quite work out whether the facts are that over 1000 actually have the operations or are - so far - just referred for them? That said, I know of someone who had the op just after her 19th birthday, so it’s definitely happening.

AlisonDonut · 10/02/2025 09:24

Again, if this were truly gender affirming and life saving, they'd be boasting about it. Not having to reluctantly declare it in FOIs.

illinivich · 10/02/2025 09:51

If a gender clinic refers a patient for surgery to a surgical team, the only way the surgery isnt eventually taking place is if the patient changes their mind or the patient is medically unfit to have surgery.

The surgical team arent qualified to say no to the surgery based on diagnosis. They can't say they see no evidence of gender in the same why they can see no evidence of cancer, for example.

These figures are informative because of the age of the person referred. To be referred as a teen, the diagnosis process must be very fast, or they have been attending clinics since childhood and referred as soon as they reach 17 - the decision must have been made when they were a child.

I have two friends who’ve spent over a year fighting to have their second “healthy” breast removed, both in their early 40s. It makes me so angry.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/02/2025 10:19

This shouldn't be paid for by the NHS. If a "man" can be female, there's no need for the surgery, it's cosmetic.

hamstersarse · 10/02/2025 10:24

1000 a year is horrifying

What upsets me the most is the whole movement will grind to a severe halt at some point like in the US with Trump and what’s left is 1000s of girls left wondering what the hell happened, their life in ruins

MarieDeGournay · 10/02/2025 18:31

It seems to me - no proof or anything but - that male-to-female trans people are increasingly avoiding surgery, and just relying on 'Yeah sure I've got all the male bits I was born with but I'm a woman now because I say I am', and female-to-male trans people are continuing to have surgery.

I'll readily accept correction based on facts rather than impressions!

LovelessRutting · 10/02/2025 18:41

The only person I know in real life who has had gender affirming surgery has required multiple revisions so that could be increasing the number of referrals.

illinivich · 10/02/2025 18:59

Mastectomies (top surgery) would have a different procedure code and a different referral route than revision because of medical complications.

If there is a problem with the surgery, they wouldnt be referred by a gender clinic, but a GP or surgical team in the follow up consultations.

HelloMyNameIsElderSmurf · 10/02/2025 19:28

Jesus, and the waiting lists for reconstructions after mastectomies for breast cancer are appalling, especially in Scotland. Saw a news article recently that said women in the Highlands have been waiting around 7 years.
