Hi everyone. As someone new(ish) to GC, I'm on a huge learning curve and as the title suggests, I'm trying to compose a reading list. I'd love your recommendations for GC related and other essential feminist reading material.
I've just purchased 'Our bodies, their battlefield' thanks to a thread on FWR.
All suggestions welcome and thank you in advance

Helen Joyce

Trans

I haven't read any of Dr Az Hakeen's stuff yet but every interview he has done has been exceptionally fascinating as he shines a unique light on things from the male and psychiatric perspective

Richie Heron is also good to read for this - has a chapter in one of Hakeen's books, own substack writings and I believe is writing a book at the moment.

From the feminist perspective there are now many:

Kathleen stock material girls

I've had a Brain freeze and need to walk the dog; others will definitely fill in!

I would love to read the politicisation of mumsnet by Dr Sarah Pederson too.

Anything by Hadley Freeman, Suzanne Moore, Julie Bindel and Sarah Ditum.

Helen Joyce

Trans

I'd start with this. Very well written, and gives a good, clear picture of where we are now and how we got here.

I’d second Material Girls by Kathleen Stock, it’s pretty short and very easy to read and covers the main issues so is a good intro.

WarriorN · 08/02/2025 08:14

Yes I think Trans is the best starting point.

Only after reading that is reading anything like the work of Genevieve Gluck going to both make sense or even be accessible as you need nerves of steel to do so.

Gluck is a journalist who has been investigating the worst aspects of trans ideology for a number of years. She's part of Reduxx, an online news source and runs her own website with many research articles.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I'm having a busy day but I'll check back later 👍

Not specifically about trans issues but I do recommend everyone reads The Gendered Brain by Gina Rippon which looks at the whole history of scientific investigation into how male and female brains are different and from examining that evidence helps demonstrate (though this is my own conclusion rather than the point of the book) that any thought of it being possible for a male brain to exusy in a female body (or vice versa) is just sexism with a new vocabulary.

I wasn't ignoring. I'm currently in a faraway land with patchy internet access (and I've also been side-tracked following Sandie's tribunal)
Thanks all for taking the time to give me your recommendations. That looks like plenty to be getting on with. Much appreciated 👍 😊

This isn't strictly GC but falls under the heading of wider 'essential feminist reading material'. Of Woman Born by Adrienne Rich, especially the chapter on mothers and daughters and 'matrophobia' the fear of 'becoming one's own mother' which I suspect contributes to why so many younger women are pulled into this ideology.

FlorisApple · 09/02/2025 10:13

I'm currently listening to Hags by Victoria Smith. Gosh, it's brilliant.

Iamnotalemming · 28/05/2025 12:51

I've just downloaded Kathleen Stock's audio book, thanks to this thread. And recently binge listened to Trans by Helen Joyce after hearing her on Women's Hour recently.

I am also currently enjoying Glinner's book Tough Crowd, which is a memoir of sorts but also sets out how he was dumped by his media friends for having GC opinions.
