BBC: Trans man says he locked himself away over period

I love and value the BBC. But in what sense is this a news story? Not only is it not news (ie it is about as consequential as reporting 'Middle-aged woman says she struggles with the remote control'), it is also exceptionally stupid.

From what I have seen ALL the period product manufacturers - tampons, pads and pants have gone above and beyond to serve the needs of this small group of gender non conforming women. It is utterly self obsessed nonsense to suggest no masculine period underwear is available.

BobbyBiscuits · 03/02/2025 13:42

They say they 'have to change their voice to sound like a lad'.
But why? I mean firstly, if they want people to think they are male then what's wrong with changing your voice?
Secondly, are they being shunned because they're perceived as a woman with short hair, god forbid...a lesbian? And are being discriminated against for that?

BoeotianNightmare · 03/02/2025 13:43

He said he had to put on a "fake deeper voice and pretend to be a lad just to go to the shop"

Seems a very strange complaint from someone who is literally pretending to be a lad every single day.

well if they had they wouldn't be able to moan to the press?

It is fucking infuriating. This isn't even an actual problem - this person doesn't actually currently have periods.

How about we concentrate our period attention on period poverty? how about that. Instead of yet again havin the focus of the press on these non-problems?

"Moan to the press'. = raising awareness. Which it has, look at us now, talking about it.

"How about we concentrate our period attention on period poverty"

Bit of whataboutery. Why can't people raise awareness for both?
Period poverty is a real problem, and very important one, maybe start a thread about it?

Signalbox · 03/02/2025 13:50

Posted on wrong thread.

Zebedee999 · 03/02/2025 14:01

Jeez some people are feeble imbeciles -

"Jay-Harley said he "would cry" and "lock myself away" every month when he menstruated because he had to wear female underwear to use sanitary products.
"I couldn't look at myself in the mirror, even though I would be wearing my suits - I knew what I had on underneath," he said.
"Every day was a battle to carry on.""

Both what? We all know period poverty exists, demonstrably.

The problem with the other 'problem' that you would have people raise awareness for is that there is no obvious problem there - there are safe spaces for trans people in Llanelli, there is suitable underwear, shops will serve women with short hair, some men don't have deep voices, periods are shit...

We're all talking about it to say where's the problem?

Your comment made me laugh but you’re absolutely right.

Interesting that they ‘said the quiet part out loud’ and admitted that they are pretending to be male. How come when gender critical feminists describe a TM as ‘a woman pretending to be a man’ we are transphobic, but an actual trans-identifying person is allowed to admit that this is exactly what they’re doing.

There was some discussion of this article on the BBC WTF thread yesterday:

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5052273-bbc-wtf?page=7

It’s basically a PR puff piece for a trans-identified male and his charity/underwear company. Not really a great use of the license fee but hey …

Thanks - I somehow missed that discussion. But I think you're probably right to say it's a puff piece for Zoah. It should go without saying that a publicly-owned broadcaster shouldn't be publishing advertorial content for brands, but it seems like that's what's happened here. Otherwise, what's the point of the story? Where does it come from?

Unfortunately the whiny tone of the rest of it (having to put on a deep voice etc because rural Wales is so bigoted) very much had the vibe of the "only gay in the village" sketch in Little Britain.

What does she want? Period pants for men? But men don't have periods... so confusing.

caramac04 · 03/02/2025 14:35

So they have to wonder if somewhere is a safe space for them. Welcome to our world. Did they not remember what it was like for them before they decided to identify as a man?
Most women for much of the time throughout their lives have to be vigilant and their activities are often limited because of the threat men present.

Glorybox2025 · 03/02/2025 14:36

I'm sorry what? That person had to hide away because they had to wear women's knickers (why hide? Who sees your knickers?) when they had their period because why? Pads don't fit in boxers? Surely period pants that are like large briefs exist? Or if they use tampons or moon cup they can wear any pants they like! And they have to put on a fake deep voice for 'safety'? Where? Who is beating them up for sounding like a woman??

NecessaryScene · 03/02/2025 14:38

No, the problem is that they're having to put in some effort.

What they want is for everyone else to pretend that they're a lad, without them having to actually do anything themselves.

If they have to do start giving instructions to the supporting cast, or the supporting cast's performances can't be relied on unless they do something, then that breaks the "I'm a lad" fantasy for them.

Glorybox2025 · 03/02/2025 14:38

Excuse the underwear pictures but what's the difference between a and b??

Extra extra read all about it. Trans man(woman) cries about getting her period 🙄 I mean FFS get over yourself😒

SailorSerena · 03/02/2025 14:41

TheCourseOfTheRiverChanged · 03/02/2025 12:40

This sort of story worries me, how many female people transition because they imagine all the real women are leaping about saying "hooray I've got titties! and my lovely period!!"

I highly doubt trans men are this stupid.

And this person is a therapist.
Surely therapists should have worked on their own issues and have enough self awareness to be able to be helpful.

No it is another person who is the therapist.

ERthree · 03/02/2025 14:48

An attention seeking prat.

ViciousCurrentBun · 03/02/2025 14:49

You can buy men’s undies that look just like women’s knickers, men need pants like that so their cricket boxes can stay snug, budgie smugglers.

HaveYouActuallyDoneAnyWashingThisWeekMum · 03/02/2025 14:52

Couldn’t get further than “..when he menstruated…”. Men don’t menstruate. This is a woman.

mum2jakie · 03/02/2025 14:57

SidewaysOtter · 03/02/2025 15:01

Greyskybluesky · 03/02/2025 14:44

No it is another person who is the therapist.

Almost anyone can set themselves up as a counsellor or therapist with very little training.

"Proper" therapists - as in clinically trained and accredited ones - do have to go through a huge amount of counselling themselves to make sure they aren't bringing their experiences into someone else's treatment. A friend went though this as part of her training and I know she found it very hard.

But equally, an acquaintance set themselves up as a "counsellor" for food problems, while having raging issues herself. It's almost like they see "treating" other people as part of their own healing, which is all kinds of wrong.

LazyArsedMagician · 03/02/2025 15:02

He said he has had to "put on a fake deeper voice and pretend to be a lad just to go to the shop, a restaurant, or pub".

Woman wants to be a man, calls herself a trans man; doesn't want to be perceived as a man?

Make it make sense.

BeBraveLittlePenguin · 03/02/2025 15:06

Are we absolutely sure the BBC isn't in deep cover here from the GC side? Because they are doing sterling work shining a light on the insanity right now.
