Men allowed to say no to women members. Surely this is illegal these days?

Frankly I wouldn’t want to spend my time surrounded by these men. However women should have the choice..

Maybe if women self ID as men..

Both sexes should have sex only spaces, clubs, sports, if they want

However currently biological men seem to have access to any space they want with a piece of paper or because they say so, to little publicity of the unfairness on women.

I wonder what would happen if transmen try and join various men only clubs, I think there would be massive pushback and wouldn't be allowed. Especially with the 'old school'.

It's depressing that the potential of threatening a male only space will be the catalyst to enforcing same sex only clubs, maybe. In fact didn't this happen with a swimming pond in London or am I way off?

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5780623/amp/Female-protesters-break-men-lido-leap-pool.html

..because men identifying as women were allowed in to the ladies pool. They didn’t like it the other way around.. shocker.

‘In order to cater for transgender women, the women's pond changed its rules last December to allow men in who say they identify as female.’

Female protesters BREAK INTO a men-only lido and leap into the pool

One of the protesters in Hampstead, North London, put on a bushy beard while another swam in a lime mankini – a joke male version of a bikini – to make their point that they 'identified' as men.

@Wemaybebetterstrangers yes that was it! It’s a one way street it seems.

No, they allow trans women.

So the Women’s Institute allow men, men who identify as women.

The single sex spaces we are campaigning to retain/get back are toilets, changing rooms, sports teams etc. Men have those.

This is a different kettle of fish. I'm not against male only social clubs per se. I think it's only problematic to the extent that they become places where all the judges or all the police commissioners, etc go.

However, the WI has a policy of accepting male members and that's the priority to sort out - getting women-only clubs back and starting new ones.

IwantToRetire · 29/01/2025 19:41

Can we stop prepetuating the myth.

TW with a GRC are only allowed into a women's only space if the organisers of that space have decided they think that's okay.

The problem is that not enough women can be bothered, or even want to impose the proportionate clause that allows biological women spaces only.

So no, "legal women" (TW with a GRC) are not allowed every where.

The problem is too many people including women think they should.

ie the problem isn't the law, but so many women have sided with the Stonewall position.

This is why I said up thread, even though many men would not think twice about setting up a club just for biological males, most women would think, oh dear, we must be kind and include TW.

The mechanisms are there for biological women only spaces.

Unfortunately not enough women want to use them.

Even though if it was a private club there would be no legal challenge to them doing this.

No it's fair enough. WI is women only. More or less

Not any more.

Can women legitimately campaign for womens only spaces while simultaneously complaining about male only spaces?

Indeed.

I didn’t realise they did.

I don’t have any issue with women having women’s clubs and men having men’s ones.

I didn’t realise my incorrect statement was bringing up trans issues.

Lyn348 · 29/01/2025 20:14

IMO only minority and disadvantaged/vulnerable groups should be allowed single sex groups. So women should be allowed them due to them being vulnerable (to men) and disadvantaged (in the work place). Men should not be allowed single sex groups such as in the OP as these are about work and networking opportunities that are then being denied to women who are already at a disadvantage in the workplace. Men should only be allowed single sex groups for things such as sexuality, MH issues or other things that may make them as a group disadvantaged or vulnerable IMO.

No, they allow trans women.

And they are men.

user1492757084 · 31/01/2025 03:55

Private social clubs, just like private charities, should be allowed to determine their own membership.
Some of those clubs might vote to include transgender, some might not.

CoralHare · 29/01/2025 18:49

No, I think it’s fine. Men should be able to have male only spaces and women should be able to have female only spaces. Obviously this should be related to employment or where government business is done etc as that would be discriminatory. But social clubs should be allowed to be single sex.

Agreed. I think its fine.

Off the top of my head - East india club is men only too. Women can be brought as guests.

I think its fine to have men only spaces.

Yes. Because the purpose of female only spaces is to pritect the vulnerable and create a space where those who have been oppressed and abused can learn to thrive. Whereas the purpose of a male-only club like the Savile is to conserve the power of the patriarchy and lock female people out of opportunities to fully engage with society, politics and business. The former purposes are legitimate exceptions to the equalities act whereas the latter purposes are abhorrent sexism.

This. Succinctly put.

SharpOpalNewt · 31/01/2025 05:28

Why a lot of these men only institutions have had to have women members is that they were excluding women from networking opportunities, promotion, decision making in business, legal or parliamentary affairs, or from an opportunity to play cricket or golf in their area.

It is not the same as needing women only spaces. Obviously.

Wemaybebetterstrangers · 31/01/2025 08:24

Oh dear. So they’re not bending rules at all. He is still a man. In a men’s club. On first glance I thought they’d let in a woman 😱, who identified as a man. But no. Of course they didn’t…

Would prefer that there are single sex spaces available to all if they want it.

Not for those who say they are women when they are biologically male and vice versa.

cheezncrackers · 31/01/2025 08:26

We can't have it both ways OP. Either we women want to have single sex spaces, or we don't. And if we do and if we shout loudly about wanting them, then men should also be allowed male only spaces. It's fair enough IMO.

I agree. It’s the hypocrisy of men, I’m highlighting.
