‘A characteristic of cult language is what linguists call a thought-terminating cliché. This is a platitude that signals virtue, but stops discussion.’

Christian writer compares terms such as 'trans child' to cult language, and defends Rachel Rooney's book My Body is Me.

One of the things I notice is how transactivists (and the foolish adults trying to be kind) always swerve discussion from children to adults (folk etc). You see it regularly on here - there's a discussion about children and safeguarding and then a poster (often a transactivist) will start going on about "people" and their rights. Aways desperate to swerve the discussion away from children too young to consent or understand this adult ideology onto "trans rights" to exist, to self determine etc.
In most cases, it's a deliberate attempt to derail posters from speaking about the dangers to children.

This is SO true. My experience exactly.

  • ‘Finding my true self’. This is a staple of cults and marketing departments. It separates an inferior, everyday self from an aspirational authentic self, which can be discovered at a price. That price might be buying a product, or surrendering your money and life choices to a manipulative leader who claims to know your true self better than you do.

This bit caught my eye. So much of the cult is hypercapitalism - buy these hormones even though you don't need them, have this surgery which you also don't need but which will make some people very rich, then another surgery, and another, and revisions and corrections on and on. More drugs to fix the damage done. Spend spend spend. A marketing dream! How the likes of antifa, BLM, ACAB and 'eat the rich' types can be down with this is a mystery to me. YOU ARE BEING EXPLOITED!

On Not Having a True Self

‘This above all: to thine own self be true.’ One of many lines from Shakespeare’s Hamlet that have become everyday English phrases. They are the words of Polonius, chief minister to the King, to his son Laertes before he heads off to university. Here,...

A lively new feature by the same writer, on the ethics of fashion.

Explores issues about the body, nature v culture, androgyny, and why faith groups have often been hostile to fashion.
