My terfing energy has been focussed elsewhere in recent months and I haven't been here or on TwiX or social media much. Now I've taken responsibility for tweeting/ comms on behalf of a small but potentially significant LGB group and I discover that there seems to be something going on — another schism — in GC world. Jane Clare Jones's name seems to be coming up a lot. Something seems to have gone on but I can't work out what.

If it was my own account I'd just ignore, but the followers of this account are bringing it up and seem to expect an opinion to be expressed or a side to be taken. Also I'm seeing a lot about 'ultras' and 'lites', which is new to me. Can anyone enlighten me? I need to tread carefully.

One of my offspring told me that the thumbs up sign is totally sarcastic with the youth.

A friend was unnerved at being told the same by her teen.

We routinely use thumbs up for speed / to express support in my workplace. I assume that we’re all on safe ground as there are so few young ‘uns to be offended.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/12/2024 18:28

My teen DSD went through all the emojis on her phone with her Dad and I to show us what they mean to Gen Z, she was horrified at some of the ones we regularly use 🤣

My reaction was to send him an extra large thumbs up in response to his 'mum, you know that's sarcastic don't you?'

I completely agree with this. Visible reactions would have the same negative impact on discussion and debate here that I've seen it have on other forums.

It would be awful if we got caught up in some kind of petty, competitive showing off. Imagine!

Oh Datun I have had a rotten day with a cold and you just made me laugh so hard. Thank you.

I have of course reacted appropriately and not sarcastically.

ArabellaScott · 18/12/2024 19:20

Well, Datun, was that really necessary?

I feel a schism coming on.

themostspecialelfintheworkshop · 18/12/2024 19:22

That's what I mean. It's genius. You can hide behind the fact that you have no idea

YouveGotNoBloodyIdea · 18/12/2024 20:22

To be fair the youth can make anything sound sarcastic.

Hello darling, how are you?
Oh, ok.
Riiight.
thanks
Really?
Sure!
Yeah

All totes sarcastic.

How can you tell if a teen is being sarcastic? Are their lips eyes or thumbs moving?

Congratulations. You, too, can have your corpus contributions scrutinised by Aston's Institute for Forensic Linguistics for non-linguistic analysis. Or some such.

Not sure. Mumsnet were taking action against OpenAI and waiting for an update from Aston, last I heard

It is so tedious to see all these university-educated people rambling on about how working class they are. Once you attain third level education you have moved beyond the working class mentality. This is usually a good thing because education is usually expansive. But the extreme inverted snobbery that has been going on for decades in the uk means that everyone is afraid to be described as middle class. Being described as “middle class” is one of the worst insults that gets thrown about here.
Anyway kjk has clearly moved far beyond her working class roots and jcj is lower middle class. It’s completely irrelevant. JCJ is wordy and intellectual and kjk is mouthy and anti intellectual.

Yesterdaysleftovers · 19/12/2024 11:43

Serial lurker here. I have just caught up with the JCJ threads on TwiX. They are incredibly annoying, as they are based on a dishonest framing of female reactions to male invasion of their spaces as "disgust", followed by the citation of numerous irrelevant academic papers which allegedly prove why this is "wrong". There is also a very offensive comparison with the past situation of gay men. I wanted to respond asking why JCJ thought no-one was criticising the alleged male "disgust" towards gender non-conforming men, which drove the original changes to Equality policy and guidance which we are now fighting against. However, I got side-tracked by a side discussion where she was asked for practical solutions and her answer was "deal on a case by case basis". This is, of course, unsatisfactory, but it made me think. Much as I would like to repeal the GRA, I think that ship has sailed. Here, instead, are my (admittedly provocative) suggestions for "compromise":

  • a GRA must be produced for inspection on demand before any male-presenting person can access a women-only space. No certificate, no entry.
  • make it illegal to label any space which allows males in as "women only". If it is mixed-sex, it must be clear to all.
  • make the GRA process much much more stringent. Those who initially supported the GRA (me included) assumed they were helping horribly bullied gay men like April Ashley, who passed well and didn't engage in predatory behaviour. In order to weed out those with dodgy motives, the application process should include character references from named female relatives/ friends and a face to face interview in which sexual history can be interrogated.
  • Anyone with any history of violence or abuse, or who is serving/ about to serve a custodial sentence should have their application suspended until the end of their sentence.
  • include a GRC revocation process, which can be instigated by third parties on the production of evidence of [serious] misdeeds.

Intrusive? Yes, but so are men in spaces where women are naked or vulnerable.

Of course it will never happen.
