Foucault taught to Y12. I need some help please

I have received an email from school that Y12 will be looking at Foucault's theories on Power. This in itself isn't a huge issue but the video they have been sent to watch does say that he also wrote about sex and sexuality. The teacher always signs off he/him and so I'm wondering if he is subtly trying to introduce queer theory. I know that Foucault was a child rapist who wanted to remove the age of consent but I'm wondering if I should say something to school and if so what?

He wrote significantly about power.

what are you worried about? I doubt queer theory is in the curriculum.

There are a lot of people telling us 'i doubt they will be doing queer theory' these days.

Look at the A Level Sociology curriculum. Foucault is in there.in relation to power and crime. Plus there’s nothing inherently wrong about discussing queer theory. Sociology as a taught subject covers a wide range of theories and theorists.

People should be discussing Queer Theory as an ideology that breaks down the boundaries between self and family, and adults and children and to warn people that those that practice it should be avoided if you don't want your life destroyed.

What this guy is doing is pretending to be discussing power and crime and hoping one of them brings up the sexuality aspect in order to open up that discussion. It's a known tactic.

Sskka · 16/12/2024 07:25

It won’t happen, and it’s good that it will.

Really? Let them discuss it. You can’t suppress a theory because you don’t like it. I’m not a fan of neoliberalism but I understand the need to teach it. Folk (including year 12s) have critical thinking skills.

A lot of posters on here seem intent on ignoring safeguarding and the huge red flags waving here aren’t there? I wonder why 🤔 ?

That didn't happen.
And if it did, it wasn't that bad.
And if it was, that's not a big deal.
And if it is, that's not my fault.
And if it was, I didn't mean it.
And if I did, you deserved it.

Folk (including year 12s) have critical thinking skills.

I am sorry if I seem rude to say it but when I see year 12s included in ‘folk’, I know a certain kind of gate crashing of children’s boundaries and sensibilities is being promoted on behalf of adults.

Critical thinking skills don’t come in a weighed out parcel all of a sudden. There are adults in universities who don’t have enough critical thinking skills to be more than befuddled by certain philosophies.

Calling children 'folk' is queer theory and a red flag. Hope that helps.

Because there are no red flags

Talesfromtheriverbank · 16/12/2024 12:10

People then.

You seem intent in creating a conspiracy that some children are about to be brainwashed because they are being exposed to a theory in A Level. FFS. Let’s pretend it doesn’t exist then…..

if it helps. I am actually a gender critical feminist but the levels of paranoia on MN never cease to amaze me. There are things to be worried about but I doubt this is one of them.I think older teens can process information about sex and gender. and Foucault and all the other theorists they will learn about. I would be amazed in a crowded A Level curriculum that this teacher has the time to corrupt such innocent minds. Anyway we can’t pretend it doesn’t exist.

BTW my use of ‘folk’ is not queer theory. It’s a general term. I’m Scottish. It just means people.

Talesfromtheriverbank · 16/12/2024 12:12

‘I am sorry if I seem rude to say it but when I see year 12s included in ‘folk’, I know a certain kind of gate crashing of children’s boundaries and sensibilities is being promoted on behalf of adults.’

Gatecrashing boundaries…..FFs.

MerryMaker · 16/12/2024 12:16

Folk is an old english word. It has nothing to do with queer theory.

Notice how poster keep pretending this is about what is taught within controlled lessons rather than an uncontrolled drop in lunch club by a teacher who professes his queer faith….

If there were ever a tell…

EmpressoftheMundane · 16/12/2024 12:29

I think it’s true that you can pretend ideas don’t exist.
But there is a lot of power in controlling the agenda of which ideas get time and attention.

The commenter made a mistake because OP did not say say in the original post that this was at an optional lunchtime club.

I am not mistaken. I never said they mentioned it in their first post but they did mention it an hour and seven minutes later:

”This lecture isn't course related, it's a lunchtime drop in for all to attend to widen their world view.”

Then again the next day. But yeah keep pretending this is controlled A level lesson time carefully monitored for impartial presentation to try and downplay the safeguarding flags it raises….
