LinkedIn pronoun display has gone

It used to really irritate me, at least half of my network having their she/her and he/him next to their display name, but it's gone. I wondered if it was just me and googled it and it seems to have been removed as a feature

"waving them around" 😂

Seems a fair description. It's not like anyone was asking.

Good

NotMyFIrstTIme · 06/12/2024 15:28

The 'add your pronouns' option is available (in a browser) as of today.

Ooh, I must remember to cycle through my extensive list of pronouns regularly each week.

You're not taking this seriously, are you ?

FranticFrankie · 06/12/2024 16:23

Isn’t it all about neo pronouns now?
I’ve seen ‘turtleself’ recently. As a keen fan of reptiles, I’m liking it 🤔

My neo pronoun can't be written and has no pronunciation. It's almost as if it doesn't exist except in the mind of the beholder.

I am a woman, born female and identify as female. But I work in a heavily male dominated industry and have an ambiguous name even in its full form (so not even like I could put "Alexandra" but I otherwise go by Alex).
So pronouns on LinkedIn are needed for me. The volume of emails I get addressed to me as a Mr!! I have my profile picture where I am clearly female but the bloody [men of the] industry just assume that there is no possible way a woman could be doing the job. (Yes I'm mostly angry at them about it!)
But, I suppose what I'm saying is, I feel that pronouns do help people in addition to those who want to change their gender.
Pronoun use isn't just people "being hard work"!

But the use of pronouns these days doesn’t actually confirm anyones sex!

I use mine to confirm how special I am.

I thought everybody did ?

No it doesn't. But I don't want to be "mistered" and I can't think of a better way to avoid that in a quick and simple way - short of showing people my genitals. Fairly sure that's not allowed on LinkedIn/in polite society.

The thing is, not everybody puts letting the world know what sex they are as high a priority as you do. Nobodies wrong and nobodies right.

No, but it confirms what pronouns they'd like to be used, which is handy if that's the thing you want to know about them.

imjusthereforAIBU · 06/12/2024 16:51

Totally agree - but that's also why I don't think seeing that someone states their pronouns immediately means they're attention seeking/"gender non conforming" etc.
I'm glad it's still an option on LinkedIn is what I'm saying.

From what I hear elsewhere, a not-insignificant number of people have been removing them from their bios of late, so it depends whose profile you look at.

Slightly curious what's happened to prompt this ? And why ?

nauticant · 06/12/2024 17:43

Possibly because it's beginning to look like the most recent embarrassing fad and a bit naff.

Or as the kids would say, it's so cringe.

That did occur, but this is performative narcissism. not flared trousers.

The only event I can think of is the US election and it's ongoing fallout. Maybe a lot of people have suddenly felt a little exposed as the New Word Order starts to hove into view ?

It's it's now a premium feature 😀

Does it work?
If people can't see from your profile picture that you are clearly a woman, does putting she/her on there make any difference?
Not trying to be goady, it's just every single person who I've ever seen use she/her or he/his is definitely the same gender at their biological sex, and all the they/theirs you can tell from their haircuts Smile

I'm very excited about this! I think it's great news!!!

The beginning of the fall of the house of cards!

I wonder why the decision was made.

SerendipityJane · 07/12/2024 10:25

I wonder why the decision was made.

There must have been some metric that showed it wasn't adding value and also costing value.

LinkedIn are owned by Microsoft. Microsoft have demonstrated an uncanny ability to reduce the value of everything they have ever bought to zero.

All of these platforms are a very finely balanced high wire act between what they deliver for "free" and what they can persuade punters to sign up for.

I am guessing the reason will be the solution to an equation using the above facts.

I think pronouns are a good idea. Very useful for employers - who not to employ and who to demote😂

YesterdaysFuture · 07/12/2024 17:46

Have they gone or are they only gone if you don't have them in your profile (so won't show them for others).

Interesting that only one person in my company had his pronouns on his profile and he has since left.

Oh interesting question! I don't know how we'd find out Grin
