As the title says there's finally going to be an investigation, I'm just wondering how long this one will take 🤔

More sunlight can only ever be a good thing.

FizzingAda · 03/12/2024 13:39

Going by most enquiries here the LGBT youth will be pensioners before it concludes.

INeedAPensieve · 03/12/2024 13:49

Well well well...

And are they being removed from Scottish schools yet???

ArabellaScott · 03/12/2024 13:50

About time.

And yes, I cannot believe that schools are still willingly engaging this organisation. Unbelievable.

Helleofabore · 03/12/2024 14:55

That is good new OP!

UtopiaPlanitia · 03/12/2024 16:58

I hope the Commission does a more thorough investigation than they did of mismanagement at Mermaids. Charities for young people hiring people with links to paedophilia need serious checking of their hiring and general HR policies & processes. A telling off won’t do, proper change of organisational culture is needed in order to keep children safe.

EvelynBeatrice · 03/12/2024 17:07

It’s very sad that so many of what used to be reputable charities have fallen to what frankly are perverts due to the criminally naive wet lettuces that govern/ run them.

I had donated to Childline for years - it was taken over by NSPCC and I continued donating. The last straw was when the organisation’s first reaction to an employee filming himself performing a sex act in the workplace lavatory was to defend the employee. Management who thought that was appropriate in any workplace, let alone a charity who’s main purpose is supposed to be safeguarding children, were so far beyond the normal and acceptable that I stopped my standing order immediately.

Should clarify that it's the Scottish charity commission (goes by oscr) who are investigating them as their a Scottish only charity

Ta for the clarification 👍

I wonder should we expect the Scottish Charity Commission to perform about the same as or better than the hobbled and interminable investigation carried out in England regarding Mermaids?

FizzingAda · 03/12/2024 19:22

I always gave to the a book .Trust at Christmas, they buy a selection of around ten books or so for deprived children who may have no books of their own. There are lovely letters after Christmas from the children. This the list of books included one exploring 'genders' and 'inclusivity' (how I hate that word), so I regretfully pulled out of this Christmas donation 🙁.

I'd say worse as they are an arms length Scottish government body investigating the Scottish government's favourite children's charity. As such I expect a full whitewash.

It's just so frustrating. This charity has failed so many safeguarding principles. If not shut down then at least a complete change in culture and management is needed. I'll not be holding my breath for the Scottish government to actually do a thorough investigation. The fact they are still getting taxpayers money and aren't being automatically pulled from schools is concerning.

There's a piece in the Scottish section of the Times but I can't remember how to post a link.

SinnerBoy · 04/12/2024 14:59

Tess White, shadow equalities minister for the Scottish Conservatives, said: “Given the serious concerns surrounding this organisation, OSCR’s decision to launch an investigation is a welcome step.

“SNP ministers should finally show some common sense and pause funding for the charity until this situation is resolved.”

I suspect that pigs on the wing will be seen before that happens, sadly.

It isn’t the Charity Commission - this is a Scottish charity so it will be the Charity Commissions smaller and less resourced cousin - OSCR.

AlisonDonut · 04/12/2024 18:38

The Charities Commission are not equipped to investigate safeguarding, they are only concerned with fraud and spending money on the things that they are supposed to. Unless there is ample evidence of them syphoning money into their own bank accounts, very little else will get looked at.

They are happy to accept a charity saying 'We'll learn lessons from your investigation' rather than actually close the damn place down for safeguarding issues. They just have no teeth and are pointless.

The Charity Commission is still infinitely better equipped than OSCR will be. Remembering of course the incestuous links between Scottish public sector organisations and the Scottish Government.

From the article:

"LGBTYS has been affected by <a class="break-all" href="https://archive.is/o/kySu9/www.thetimes.com/article/no-one-is-above-scrutiny-when-a-childs-at-risk-pr8qcrqgw" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">child abuse scandals dating back over a decade.
James Rennie, a former chief executive, was convicted in 2009 of child sex assaults as a member of one of Britain’s worst paedophile rings.
Another man, who wrote a schools guide for the youth charity, was convicted this year of sharing indecent images of children, including some of newborn babies.
The chairwoman of BBC’s Children in Need charity resigned last month alleging “institutional failure” over grants awarded to LGBTYS."

It's bad enough that they are still lying about the safety of puberty blockers. But then you look at all their link to paedophile rings and it really makes you wonder.

Of course it's just as coincidence that Mermaids had a paedophile supporter on their board of trustees. And I wont even go in to detail about Aimee Challenor's father who was convicted of raping a 10 year old girl and who allegedly used Aimee's political status to try to get access to the addresses of cared-for children. Definitely just a coincidence.

'Callous' is exactly the word. The OSCR seems totally complacent.

INeedAPensieve · 27/03/2025 10:07

Why is this not headline news on BBC Scotland? This charity needs defunding and removed from schools asap. Paedophiles, sex offenders and now encouraging self harm. FFS.

It is beyond astounding that this is where we are. Things like this are so fucking commonplace now that they hardly register, if they are reported at all. But I suppose that's the whole point ....
