  • Online Gen Z women spend over an hour longer each day online than men of same age
  • Men more avid users of gen-AI, online-dating and porn, while women more likely to use health sites
  • Women and teenage girls more concerned about online harms
  • Male-skewed Reddit overtakes X to become fifth most popular social media platform in UK
and

Looking at the top 10 social media websites and apps, women account for the majority of time spent on
Pinterest (79%),
Snapchat (66%),
Instagram (64%),
TikTok (62%) and
Facebook (61%).
Men, on the other hand, account for the majority of time spent on
Quora (70%),
X (63%),
Reddit* (61%),
LinkedIn (60%) and
YouTube (56%).

Also raises the issue why so many women's groups and campaigners think being on twitter is the best way to reach out to and influence other women.

And whether in leaving twitter bluesky has any other function than to make lefties feel good about themselves.

Although not for one moment suggested women move from twitter to Reddit!

This is really interesting, thanks for posting.
There is so much data there e.g. women are 'less likely to believe that the internet is a good thing for society (34% vs. 47%)', a significant difference which deserves investigation.

It seems almost nostalgic to see the categories 'men' and 'women' being used unapologetically Smile

You can't do women's rights on Instagram and tik tok because if you point out trans women are men you get deleted. MaryCate Delvey has been banned from everything apart from Twitter for Listen to Trans People.

Yes we all know this, but some women's groups continue to only post on twitter which isn't accessible, and has a minute amount of users compared say to facebook, which has a high number of women users.

I just dont understand irrespective of who owns it, why women put such much energy in to posting on a SM plaform that is irrelevant to the majority on the internet.

For instance:
Facebook has 3,065 million users
Twitter has 611 million users

How do they know this information is true? On the whole I don't give real information about my age, sex etc. when I sign up to sites like Pinterest (or 4chan 😈) and probably wouldn't tell anyone if interviewed in person.

I'm not on Facebook so I can't check. Do you mean groups like Sex Matters and For Women Scotland aren't on Facebook? I agree that's a big oversight. I can't believe groups like this aren't on Facebook through choice.

I am fairly sure both these groups are, and many others. But quite a few women campaign groups aren't.

And those that are will still start a discussion on twitter, but not on facebook.

And, which is an existing thread now, WPUK (to their credit) did have quite robust discussions on facebook, and it maybe the questioning some of their statements received, made them think about how in tune they are with GC women.

And althought it does happen, it is possible to make statements about TW are men etc. although it does happen that posts get deleted, but that will usely be because someone reports a post rather than a block. I assume this is what happens on twitter. Its not twitter HQ, it is other users who report.

By the way I am not saying facebook is great, but just in relation to being a campaign group and wanting to make contact with as many women as possible, at the moment this is the largest platform.

Personally I think it would be great if women came onto FWR and it became known that any women wanting to be in touch, have intelligent(!) discussion, share info this was the place to be.

Twitter is more like taking your chance in an adversarial free for all.

I not commenting on what individual women chose to spend their time on, but very much if you are a campaigning group.

Agree, but suspect many just sign up.

Have to admit I haven't read the full report, and thought is this showing that big brother listening in on us.

So how they compiled this may be in the report https://www.ofcom.org.uk/siteassets/resources/documents/research-and-data/online-research/online-nation/2024/online-nation-2024-report.pdf?v=386238

Oh dear, have just seen this:

Ofcom carries out this research twice a year using the YouGov online panel of over 2.7 million people who live in the UK.

I have real doubts about YouGov .............

They're quite different forms of communication, as well as the difference in moderation policy.

I find Twitter far better than Facebook for discovering people and groups I wasn't previously aware of, and discussions are less of an echo chamber.

If only they'd included mn in that data 🤔

Its strange isn't it given that on one level MN is recognised as being influencial, but somehow pollsters etc., dont really want to hear what we think.
