HBO are supporting Rowling. To the bewilderment and despair of Variety, and the author of some Harry Potter themed cookbook or something.

A delightful article in which the writer attempts to find a reverse gear on their ferret-pulled bandwagon.

HBO Says ‘Harry Potter’ Series Will ‘Benefit’ From J.K. Rowling’s Involvement: She ‘Has the Right to Express Her Personal Views’

HBO supports J.K. Rowling's involvement with the new "Harry Potter" show as the core fanbase grapples with Rowling’s controversial views on trans identity.

That Variety article is a fucking disgrace. But the comments!!!

bloody hell.

we really are in the Upside Down when anything remotely pro-women automatically equals anti-trans.

MelodyMalone · 21/11/2024 12:10

The Robert Galbraith books (which I love) and Strike TV series (ditto) are also hugely popular.

Brewdug · 21/11/2024 12:48

Ah, there it is. Business as usual with the 'anti trans' handwringing. Just two days ago Variety ran a notably neutral piece on JKR's takedown of John Oliver as discussed on another thread:

I quite liked 'Her and her vile terf ilk'

I've never been called an ilk before. I wonder if it involves antlers?

The films are 25 years old. These fans must be early mid 30’s now or older. The tv show is not for them anyway. It’s for kids that weren’t even born when the first maybe even the last film came out. There’s always a new generation coming along.
do 20- 35 year olds still buy Harry Potter wands?? That boggles my mind

there was a film in the 80s, a cop/chap on the run type of thing i think. Possibly with Clint Eastwood (cop). At one point one says something like "i hate people like you and of your ilk, you do know what an ilk is?"

and the reply was something like "is that like a small moose"

ETA: copilot tells me it's a line from the film "Any Which Way You Can" which is not a cop film.

Band name?

The Vile Terf Ilk.

Ok we officially need some song titles here.
How about... "TERF'd out (of Lush for not identifying as a "person who menstruates")"

DS2 is 18. He collects the wands. I can't imagine he'll stop doing so any time soon.

It's an indulgence, isn't it? Give us money and we will forgive your sins.

😱 Of course it is!

I had wondered why the idea made me feel uneasy, but it is exactly that - buying forgiveness.

And further exemplifies the notion that genderism is a qwasi-religion.

How d'you do?

You really ought to k-now w-ho's w-ho!

Actually that song might be a rather good metafor for our Vile TERFY Ilk's struggle to get biological sex recognised as the proper thing it is instead of genderfeels.

Maybe we are all Gnus...

The author of the ‘Unofficial Harry Potter Vegan Cookbook’ surveyed 250 fans & found that ‘79% of cisgender respondents felt conflicted about buying a new HP-related product’ so he suggested that when someone buys a new wand they could offset the purchase by donating to a trans charity.

Since he doesn’t mention how many ‘cisgender’ respondents there were, he might be talking about a couple of people or a couple of hundred people.

I’m pretty certain this article isn’t meant to be funny.

If you are buying a vegan cook book that's Harry Potter themed that's a pretty small self selecting group of individuals....

Ereshkigalangcleg · 21/11/2024 14:39

To add to this I present to you a megathread of tantrums on the fountain pen subreddit. Apparently a renowned pen manufacturer has brought out a Harry Potter line.

TheRoseSnake · 21/11/2024 14:48

The gender debate is a fringe issue that is magnified by those who are persistently online. Most people do not care. People think that Reddit and X reflect the opinion of the masses when it's a minority that demonizes her.

SaturdayGiraffe · 21/11/2024 14:50

ArabellaScott · 21/11/2024 09:43

That vegan cookbook person appears to have based the whole brand on its 'inspiration' of Harry Potter.

It's something to make a living ripping off someone else's ideas. Something else to then bang on about how.evil the person is that you're stealing from.

There's clearly a market for Harry Potter food!

HBO have announced this on Trans Day of Remembrance 😢 Do better, HBO.

UtopiaPlanitia · 21/11/2024 15:23

I archived the article in case it gets altered or taken down:

https://archive.is/TFyvT

I think it’s extremely one-sided and makes no genuine attempt to investigate the issues but I’m not surprised because that’s right out of Variety’s playbook when it comes to JKR.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 21/11/2024 15:38

Re: ‘Ilk’

I had a friend at University whose family title was ‘of that Ilk’

Of that Ilk" is a term used in the Scottish nobility to denote a clan chieftain in some Scottish clans. The term of that ilk means "of the same [name]",[1] and is used to avoid repetition in a person's title.

Only if you're from New Zealand 😁

EsmaCannonball · 21/11/2024 15:56

HBO is also the home of Bill Maher so they at least have a history of allowing people to speak out against transactivism.

I think the bigger worry is the impact on the careers of those who don't have the power of JKR and Maher.

The Vile Terf Ilk.

That's a good name, but "The Rights Hoarding Dinosaurs" also has a pleasing ring to it.
