I have been to meetings at the TUC head office so I can tell you what their toilets are like! Unisex, though fully enclosed with sink, toilets that are all off a corridor that's behind a door. Can't say I liked them...

Maaate · 01/11/2024 09:59

I'm "lucky" in that my employer still has separate male and female toilets as well as single occupancy mixed sex facilities so I have mentioned that.

(No one really likes the single toilets anyway as the open directly onto a main corridor and are not very soundproof 🫣)

EvelynBeatrice · 01/11/2024 10:53

Done. It’s such obvious misogyny and ignorance isn’t it - to assume that females use the toilets only for the same purpose as men
.

Over the many years at work, I’ve seen so many women use them as a kind of refuge to cry, decompress or just freshen lipstick and check tights not laddered pre big meeting.

And that’s aside from the serious stuff - morning sickness, period pain and endemetriosis, miscarriage and menopausal flooding - and there are few women who haven’t been affected by one of these. How stupid or uncaring do you have to be to ignore the biological realities. It’s bad enough to have to deal with these and ask for help from your own sex - let alone, the other.

And don’t give me the guff about separate fully contained single use rooms. Yes great if you increase your build cost by thousands to create enough - and your cleaning bill as they will be overused and get really disgusting in my experience. Additionally we nearly lost an epileptic colleague in one of these. Previously when she fitted in the shared ladies, we noticed and were able to help.

NPET · 01/11/2024 13:10

Done - tho as I'm not in a union they might ignore me!

Thank you for mentioning this.

I (hopefully) saved the life of a young woman who collapsed because I saw her hand on the floor. We got her breathing again before the ambulance arrived.

Since December 2023, the DfE guidelines are that secondary schools are supposed to have enclosed toilets. There are roughly 8-12 pupils with epilepsy in an average secondary school. Secondary school age is a common for epilepsy to start. An ambulance should be called for someone having their first seizure or after 5 minutes if they have not regained consciousness. Pupils could be in an enclosed cubicle for hours.

This is a really important point. As are all the points in your posts. Thank you.

OP, thank you - I’ve filled it in.

Great ratio in the twitter thread. Not holding my breath for a reasonable response though.
