'There are only two genders', Scottish Government says

Scots wondering which of the new 24 or 27 official genders they are can stop. The SNP have reverse ferreted in quick order and have now said there are only two genders.

'There are only two genders', Scottish Government says
The Scottish Government denies reports it had claimed there were 24 different genders.
Equalities Minister Kaukab Stewart said the Government’s position is there are only two genders - male and female - in line with Scottish law. This comes after the Government issued guidance to statisticians collating data from the 2022 Census.

So why were women being persecuted for saying this not so long ago exactly? When is the official apology?

I've seen a few surveys which ask if your "gender identity" differs from your sex registered at birth (and also asking what sex that is).

Would that work?

Yes, as long as there is an "N/A" option when asking this about gender identity.

Either they are the same category, in which case the question makes sense (but only if sex change is possible, which it isn't), or they are different categories so cannot be "the same", in which case it's a nonsensical question.

So it's a nonsensical question.

Who on earth has chosen the term trans "history". That to me implies something in the past IE they formerly identified as trans and have now de-transitioned. Surely they want to, statistically, measure trans "identify" IE the here and now.

Have name changed as I'm on this board a lot and don't want to have my work identified. I have some slight good news on a statistics front as well. I work in the public sector in Scotland; it's the research side of things and it's been soul destroying trying to gently push back on the nonsense we were being told to ask in surveys and qual research etc.

The number of complaints we were getting from respondents wasn't great either.

The gender question was: how would you describe your gender identity? The answers to choose from were: male, female, prefer not to say or described in another way (please specify if you so wish, which was an open text box).

Basically in the coding part of the project I was having to filter through tons of "this is a crap question" in the open box and of course it skewed the data and meant in the graphs it looked like we had 4% of people (for eg) describing themselves in another way when in fact they were just annoyed at the question.

We have just received new guidance from the government which says that the question will be:

What is your sex?
Male, female or prefer not to say. Then there's now an additional question which is do you have a trans history? If yes, please specify (with the option to do so). In the explainer for the trans history question it says this is a trans history that differs from your sex registered at birth.

I feel like this is clearer and will keep everyone happy as it records sex accurately, records trans identity accurately and means there is no confusion or data being skewed.

Well done to all of the women who have refused to answer the 'gender' questions and pushed back.

And thanks for reporting back!

Scotgov still talking pish, of course.

Two sexes, Swinney. Yer ma and yer da.

The rest is just waffle with a university degree.

crumpet · 03/11/2024 09:23

The birth sex question is helpful, although won’t stop anyone who has a new birth certificate as a result of a GRC, from falsely stating their birth sex

Justaspy · 04/11/2024 18:09

What a silly world we live in.

SallyForf · 04/11/2024 23:59

I remember Murray Allan. What a decent young man.

peanutbuttertoasty · 05/11/2024 00:10

The ‘trans history’ question is extremely confusing and will result in an absolute muddle 🤦🏼‍♀️

peanutbuttertoasty · 05/11/2024 00:12

They need to start dishing out apologies and reparations for those whose lives they’ve destroyed with this lunatic zealotry.

So many women’s careers and reputations destroyed. First I’ve heard about that boy, that’s so sad 😢

I agree. Imagine if someone was so blind to the ridiculousness of it all by claiming that yes, they now identified as a man but in a previous life they had been one of Cleopatra’s handmaids…… 🙂

Hi sorry I actually didn't fully write out the question. It's do you consider yourself to be trans or have a trans history?

And I agree, it's still not great tbh but at least it isn't as confusing as before. This question follows the sex question and is then prompted by a box to describe trans status if they wish(only if yes is ticked).

Does everyone remember Murray, the Scottish schoolboy who lost his education for saying what the ScotsGov is now saying?

Kicked out of school in his final year. Denied his rightful education.

Bastards the lot of them.

Absolute cowardly bastards.

Glad to hear he's getting on okay. He was just a kid, ffs.

But given that people think they can change sex, are they ticking the sex, sorry ‘gender’ box for what they were born as or what they now think they are? That’s the muddle. Still won’t have a clue what sex people are

Tiresome stupidity

What is gender, Scottish Government?

I'm reminded (yet again) how lucky we are up here to have MBM.

Kaukab 'decapitate terfs' Stewart?

'Kath Murray, of MurrayBlackburnMackenzie, said the minister’s explanation “does not stand up to scrutiny” and urged the SNP to set out where the terms really came from.

“The Scottish Government appears to have added fourteen categories that are not found anywhere in the census data,” Dr Murray said. “We are not aware of any rationale nor an audit trail for this decision.

“There is, however, a strong argument against using public funds to develop, and then apply, a detailed coding framework that gives weight to barely-used esoteric terms coined on [blogging website] Tumblr.

“One thing seems clear from the analysis. The minister’s claim misled the Scottish Parliament.”'

Oof.

I was mildly entertained by the photo caption: "A person protests in support of trans rights."

As they could so easily have said "a trans rights protestor", it felt pointed.

I'd be celebrating if they finally acknowledged there are only 2 sexes.
The word gender is unhelpful, unscientific and ultimately dangerous to women and girls. It should only be used in terms of a social construct relating to stereotypes.

Edited

This.

"The Scottish Government denies reports it had claimed there were 24 different genders."

Exactly. If it hadn't said there were 24 or whatever to begin with then what's the issue here at all?

Yes, as long as there is an "N/A" option when asking this about gender identity.

alongside the box to be ticked which says "gender is made up bollocks only given credence by complete nutters, who should by rights be in a loony bin"
