"How can trade unions help trans people in the uk?

Hey! I’m the equalities officer for my branch of UNITE the union in Brighton. I want to ask the trans community what we can do as a union to help trans people more.
• We’ve had a presence at trans pride both in the parade and also with a stall to give out materials about trans rights at work.
• I’m currently writing a letter to Wes Streeting challenging the puberty blockers ban and the awful state of trans healthcare.
• We’ve worked with other local groups such as Trans Liberation Front (TLF) to mobilise an effective counter protest to Posie Parker and other transphobic events in our city.
• I’m passing a motion to donate £200 to Trans Kids Deserve Better following their recent protests outside of the DfE and the LGB Alliance conference.
• We ran a successful event for IDAHOBIT where I gave a speech about the need to challenge the rise of the far right and anti LGBTQ+ rhetoric.
Any suggestions or advice on what more we can do would be really appreciated! 🏳️‍⚧️🚩
"

Just to be clear this means that UNITE are paying for crimes, paying to shut down debate and not allowing differing points of view, not what an equalities officer should be doing.

Excellent article. Really lays it out. Imagine defending access to places where women are undressing to males, based on any notional, supposed belief whatsoever. Being faced with some guy leering at you and asking you if you’re going to strip soon.

On another thread, someone said that men/males were at the bottom of the pile on this ‘identity’ business. They’re in the blasted driving seat, and the only ones whose wishes and ‘desires’ override any comfort or safety of women and children.

Also, I was watching a programme about the millionaires row in New York. A chap was talking about non-unionised labour being used. Once, you’d imagine that unions concentrated on the rights, pay and conditions of their members. And, if they are being treated unfairly. Now, with exposure in the Horizon IT scandal; showing the post office lack of representation of its members. And, with the way women are being treated by various unions. I’m beginning to wonder what has happened?

I'm searching for any ref to Unite the Union on Mumsnet and found this thread today. I'm in LE RM 006, which is retired members in Chelmsford and Colchester. I'd like to find any GC trade union members in Essex in Unite.

As a lifelong trade union member, I no longer have any respect for the leadership of my own union or any other whose treatment of female members I’ve heard about.

Hi @Tatatan. I saw your post. I'm not sure that you will get many replies here as tbh I'd be reluctant to message my details to an anonymous person. If you get in touch with your nearest WASPI Unite campaigners, then I'm sure you will find quite a few like minded women. All good wishes.

Feminist organisation FiLiA are setting up a Trade Union Women's Network - led by the fabulous Kiri Tunks.

"In 2025, we want to build a network of women in trade unions across the UK.
We want this network to provide connections, information, support and training to help women take up power and space in their unions.
We want to put women in touch with each other and grow the collective knowledge and skills of women in the workforce and the trade union movement."

Sounds like an excellent strategic move...

FiLiA Trade Union Women’s Network - Join us! — FiLiA

Women have been key to the success of the trade union, and they have reaped huge benefits from the collective successes of the wider labour movement. However, too often, the movement has let women down. We want to change that. Join the FiLiA Trade...
