I was on X, looking at Jenny Eclair's post about the horrors in Afghanistan. Lee Hurst's tweet was a pleasant surprise.

Interesting. Is Jenny Eclair a TWAW advocate, does anyone know?

Theeyeballsinthesky · 29/10/2024 07:56

No she’s not - from what I’ve read she avoids it as far as possible But has said in the past that while eg she wouldn’t mind having a smear from a TW she gets that other women wouldn’t want that

I think tbh she gets it but just doesn’t want the hell that publicly saying TW are not women would bring

Amelanchier · 29/10/2024 08:04

If that is the case then I don't blame her for that, not many could stand the inevitable abuse but I am pleased when I see people with a profile speaking out

Her daughter who is a writer has pronouns in her twitter bio so presume JC keeps quiet because of this too.

I am disappointed in the mouthy, fearless women I grew up with in the 80s/90 like JC, Jo Brand etc who keep their heads down on this issue.

DavidBattenburgh · 29/10/2024 08:44

Noted this a few weeks ago and gave him a follow so it's not a one off.

Also in the Mail today an article by a Dr about diversity and inclusion in the NHS
NHS should tell my patient who finally had a child she's no 'mother'

Behind a paywall now but was accessible a few minutes ago.
I was getting very depressed about the infighting I'm seeing within the movement but maybe that's fatigue and things are shifting in the outside world?

Yes she said this in an interview in 2020
^^
Eclair has a trait rarely seen in standup: she’s quite conflict-averse. Even while she’s feminist to her bones, there are faultlines in feminism – the battle over trans rights, for instance – of which she would “steer clear, in case I inadvertently said something inflammatory. Fortunately, I’ve got a 31-year-old very right-on daughter [Phoebe Eclair-Powell, a playwright]. I can always call her up and say: ‘Am I right on this?’ And she could go: ‘No, Mum, I think you’ve got this a bit wrong actually.’” What kind of thing does she typically get wrong, I wonder? “It’s mainly about checking my privilege,” she says ruefully.

well lucky for her she’s got a right thinking daughter she can check her opinions with first eh? Honestly it pisses me off so much that grown adults won’t express views until they’ve checked them with their kids first. You may as well just say “I’m old my opinions are probably invalid or stupid so I best ask a much smarter young person if it’s ok to express them”. And people wonder why ageism is rife

guinnessguzzler · 29/10/2024 09:24

Wow @Theeyeballsinthesky that is just so sad. Imagine thinking as a wise, experienced older woman that you have to check your ideas with your child. It really is depressing. As you say, ageism at its finest.

MarieDeGournay · 29/10/2024 09:47

At 31, her child is waaaaay out of touch with youth culture, practically middle-aged, so I wouldn't depend on her to check out what's in and what's not, JennyWink

NoBinturongsHereMate · 29/10/2024 09:48

That's not 'conflict averse'. That's 'thinking averse'.

Rollonsummerplease · 29/10/2024 13:15

Blokes going into " girls" changing rooms?
I don't see much to celebrate in that.

ConiferBat · 29/10/2024 13:32

A 31 year old playwright who undoubtedly gained financially and through nepotism due to her Mum's fame, lecturing others on their privilege.

Classic.

it's a bigger issue than just the apostrophes! 😛

PermanentTemporary · 29/10/2024 13:54

I thought Hurst's tweet was incredibly cloth eared and dim.

I just don't see how someone using language that diminishes and patronises women is helpful.

Do you not think that girls should be free of blokes in their changing rooms? OK, he should have mentioned women as well, but we do not have to assume he meant women when he said girls.

Is it?

The fact that it had been very difficult for women to talk to other women about men following girls into changing rooms in this country, is on point.

The media, both established and social, and politicians haven't exactly gone out of the way to facilitate the discussion.
