Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Brilliant, thanks Arabella. Has everyone seen Jenrick is doing one too? Maybe we should ask him similar.

Zoomchat with Robert Jenrick MP - Tuesday 29th October, 5pm http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnetlivee_events/5197593-zoomchat-with-robert-jenrick-mp-tuesday-29th-october-5pm

Just remembered - in the transcript, there is what appears to be a pointed comment implying that Sunak's decision to call a snap election caught her on the hop and scuppered her plans to clarify that Sex in the EA2010 meant bio sex?
Anyone else agree?

Yes, that's a bit of it I watched and I agree.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 29/10/2024 08:54

Kemi sounds like she definitely understands where GC feminists are coming from on those issues. She also, unlike an awful lot of politicians, seems to have done some homework on the problems caused by GRA 2004 and EA 2010 - it’s refreshing to have someone who understands what they’re talking about rather than giving us soundbites and platitudes to calm the weemin.

Yes, that comes out very clearly.

Yes that's why I was so keen mumsnet had framed the quesion as I had suggested because it should have focused on the process so far, ie the 2 petitions, the meeting and the promise to follow up.

Which she was clearly doing.

But without this being made clear it will just be swept under the carpet, so not only a concern because of Labour majority, but also is a denial of the democrat process which had been started to amend the EA.

All we got is the usual bland question about sex and gender identity.

As KB's recent comments about ERCC show she had a really good grasp of what the issue is - and, unlike Labour, thinks women's rights are important.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 29/10/2024 18:45

I think a broader question was picked because that was the nature of the webchat. My own question asked her what further should be done, and that wasn't picked, either. Plus Bonfire was the first poster to ask. I think the question was clear and her response was good, personally.

Maybe worth writing directly to her?

Maybe worth writing directly to her?

I think I am being a bit idealistic as presumably any new government can just bin what the old one was doing.

I suppose it was more, as she appears to have a straightforward approach if she had come up with something that could have moved things forward.

Maybe wait until the Tory leader election vote is over.

Part of me is hoping she doesn't win, and gets herself onto the Women and Equalities Committee (which currently doesn't have any Tory members) where she would be able to challenge the Labour bias.

Did the Robert Jenrick zoomchat actually take place? The thread linked above has been closed and there’s no video on it.

I found a link but it takes me to a web page that tells me I need a code. for a zoom meeting.

And on mumsnet youtube page that latest is Kemi Badenoch.

New thread for Robert Jenrick - Justine asked my question to him.

Also Arabella has done a transcript of the bit where he answered my question about female only spaces. It's on the thread I linked.

BonfireLady · 01/11/2024 10:11

(I had been typing this on the MNHQ thread but it's been closed... apologies for @-ing you in to this thread Malaga but when I copied the content to my clipboard, I couldn't remove you!)

I finally had chance to listen to this.

Wow. Please win the leadership contest 🤞I'm going to listen to Robert Jenrick too, but from what I've seen on that thread, I can't imagine he is anywhere near as articulate, considered and informed. It's clear to me that she would lead an effective opposition.

I had seen the transcript of her answer to my question but seeing and hearing it from Kemi Badenoch herself was even better. And her answer to Justine's follow-up question.

I've watched this in three installments (busy week) so apologies if I've got the wrong username but I think it was @MalagaNights who asked about SEN provision. I found her answer to this one lacking. Particularly her idea that parents needed to stop taking local authorities to tribunal. However, from how she approaches topics, it's clear that she listens. It sounds like she's heard lots from the local authority viewpoint (yes, their budgets are stretched) but as a parent, I was not going to give up on my daughter and accept the LA's initial refusal to provide an EHCP. I took it to mediation and they agreed. Had they not, I'd have gone all the way to tribunal. Her current EHCP is now inadequate, having not been updated after the last two annual reviews (despite verbal agreement at the meeting with the LA that everything that was discussed was going in). I'm still waiting to see the draft, and if it doesn't include what it needs, I'll be challenging it. Luckily I've been able to get some of the different support agencies to talk to each other, so we're in a reasonably good position where some joined up care is being provided... but none of it is backed by any paperwork within the EHCP itself. So it's just pockets of good stuff with no anchor point. Without it being in the EHCP, it has no legal standing and we wouldn't get any of it if she moved schools. I can't imagine Kemi Badenoch thinks I should just accept this... so I'm going to assume she's not fully aware of how appalling the EHCP process is in parts.

I found her description of her feminism brilliant. She articulated how I feel.

Edited for clarity: the first annual review I referred to was a meeting. The most recent annual review was a paper exercise only.... no draft plan has come out of either.

Snowypeaks · 01/11/2024 14:54

However, from how she approaches topics, it's clear that she listens.

I know what you mean. I had KB down as an ideologue, but I am going to have to revise that opinion! I take the view that it doesn't matter what your starting point is* - as long as you are open-minded and rational, you won't go too far wrong as a politician.

*actual fascists and raging communists excepted, of course!
