@newtlover You are right about that

This is an interesting thread, thank you.

I don't have the political learning to attach a label to myself, but I've always been leftwing to varying degrees.

My reason for commenting is that I felt drawn to the SW crowd when I was younger but was swiftly disabused of my qualifications to be left wing. My crime was that I was a doctor, ergo clearly rich and a Tory, and I could therefore fuck right off. Since I was neither rich, nor a Tory, but was a keen feminist and v interested in left wing thinking, this hurt. But I dutifully fucked right off.

Comments from others welcome re this. I'm surely not the only would-be acolyte who was chased out of town because of ill-fitting stereotypes.

Can you recommend any (easy to read 🥴) books or websites to a curious and disillusioned housewife. Asking for a friend.

Bannedontherun · 13/10/2024 20:56

@mauvish I had to laugh at your post, as very amusingly put. You did two things incorrectly, be a doctor and not hide your feminism tendencies. We had a self employed gardener who had employees, he was advised by wet behind the ears comrades that he had to set up a workers coop or fuck off.

All i could do was say i am sorry.

mauvish · 13/10/2024 21:03

Strangely enough, I did kinda feel that being an educated, mouthy woman was a bigger problem than my occupation!

(Surely the workers need doctors?)

(#doctorsareemployedtoo)!

Tony Cliff, Class struggle and women’s liberation, it is a good read plots the history of women's activism from 1640. Jolly good read

my memory of them is that very few were actually working class

Has anyone heard of Hegel? It was once suggested i was somewhat Hegelian in my thinking. ( he was an exiled Iranian) I had to tramp off down to the Central City library, what a rabbit hole that was. Realised i was a bit thick in comparison to some people.

Anyway @MaggieBsBoat really got why i posted (at bedtime) What i took away from my early experiences was a new way of thinking.

I suppose i could call it looking at this world politically as if I was not in it. Above so to speak.

i live in this world and all its structures, i have a life in this world, i want a life not entirely dedicated to my politics.

so I wanted to see if I still held a line.

The good news is that Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel is included in Monty Python's Philosophers Song and therefore qualifies as a "proper" philosopher. The only thing is that he appears to have been born in Stuttgart so not really Iranian.

Bannedontherun · 13/10/2024 22:34

@JanesLittleGirl sorry not explained well it was an Iranian marxist exile who said i was an Hegelian.

I just watched the Monty Python Communist Quiz. Karl Marx ends up playing for a lounge suite. 'Are you nervous, Karl?'

There's a live version on YouTube, too.

SunshineSunshineYouMakeMeFeelAlive · 14/10/2024 08:25

You sound perfectly reasonable to me op.

RoyalCorgi · 14/10/2024 09:02

I think mauvish had a lucky escape. The SWP are truly terrible people.

Bannedontherun · 14/10/2024 09:10

@RoyalCorgi Yes i agree they are now.

Have you read the Grundrisse? What are your thoughts on revolution in respect of Marx writing about automation and the undermining of value and its role in collapsing capitalism?

Have you read Negri at all?

Otherwise just wanted to pop up and wave, I'm an Autonomist Marxist writing on immaterial labour and the theoretical differences between traditional Marxist and Autonomists in relation to crisis. I'd consider myself a feminist insofar as I believe women are doubly oppressed and exploited under capitalism. But as with everything, climate change included, middle east politics, war etc,...there is one very obvious conclusion and any action still needs to take aim at destroying capitalism. No woman will have equality with ALL men whilst men have no equality. Just as not all women are equal to each other within a social system where class exists.

BlackForestCake · 14/10/2024 15:22

I think the truly terrible people are the ones burning children alive in refugee camps.

There's a lot wrong with the SWP but at its best (the best may be some time ago now) it played a crucial role in keeping alive the idea of a democratic Marxism that really meant the working class being in power.

Many of their books and publications are good. It's just a shame they don't really practice what they preach.

Smash Israeli Terror state/Victory to Palestine
'Rejoice as Palestinian resistance humiliates Israel'

was how they reported October 7

I appreciate what you say and what you feel about the SWP but they are not what this thread is about. One has to discover what Marxism offers as an aid to critical thinking, from somewhere.

And that was where i did. I do not support their current lunacy at all.

Also( not aimed at you) i refuse to get drawn into debates about Isreal and Palestine this thread has nothing to do with positional politics.

I think it’s ok to like him and be a feminist, he’s so bloody handsome, it’s like he’s not ageing! Those blue eyes…

Hazard is still a great song and holds up amazingly. Less sentimental than Right Here Waiting for You at least.

Edited

#Slopes off to Google what he looks like nowadays....
