'Set in a dystopian future, the show imagines a society where all men live under The Women’s Safety Act and are subjected to a government-imposed curfew from 19:00 to 07:00, with their movements tracked 24/7 by ankle tags.
The goal? To drastically reduce violence against women.'

Looks possibly interesting.

'Curfew also questions whether women are capable of violent acts, challenging traditional gender norms'

Hmm.

Alexandra Burke and Mandip Gill are stood in the background in front of the Women's Safety Centre, Sarah Parish is stood in the front.

Curfew series - is there a radical fix for violence against women?

Set in a dystopian future, the show imagines a society where men are subjected to a curfew.

Have earmarked this to watch - am interested in what its actual underlying moral message is. Hope it isn’t as subtle as a sledgehammer…

SilenceInside · 09/10/2024 10:39

I see that someone has run with this idea that's often talked about whenever the police or other authorities suggest that women don't go out alone at night/in the dark in order to prevent violence against them.

I wonder if it will address the issue that women often face violence in the home, so having a curfew might actually make it more dangerous for some who live with violent men.

'Curfew also questions whether women are capable of violent acts, challenging traditional gender norms' - this is also quite stupid. Yes, women are capable of violent acts, we know this because a very small percentage of women currently do commit violent acts. So women are capable of it, but most of the time, the vast majority don't. Or, do they mean violent acts against other women, because there are no men around? I guess I'll have to watch and find out, thanks for posting about it here @ArabellaScott !

Snowypeaks · 09/10/2024 10:41

I shall look out for that. Thanks.

Sandwichgen · 09/10/2024 10:49

then again, if men can define themselves as women ….

Thats a really good point, and I imagine a lot of women could get guilted / forced into also staying at home during those hours.

I wonder how and if it deals with the trans issue?

Exactly.

Hoardasurass · 09/10/2024 10:55

I wonder if they are including transwomen in their definition of women and if they are let off curfew as they have women feelings

PerkingFaintly · 09/10/2024 10:57

Oh that's really interesting, thanks for telling us about that.

I'd love to see what they do with it, but alas it's on a subscription channel (Paramount+).

I shall read everyone's comments avidly!

I wonder if it will go into the practicalities - there’d need to be a huge increase in (female?) police officers to attend “domestics” if all the men are stuck at home drinking. Would workplaces adapt and allow men to leave earlier so they can commute home by 7pm? Would the “night-time economy” collapse without male bartenders and bouncers, and would numbers of women going to bars, clubs, cinema etc increase enough for them to remain viable?

What happens to dating, etc? Huge change in workplace culture if work and/or lunchtime is the only time men and women can meet and socialise together. Or would men be allowed out during curfew as long as they have a woman with them? Is a woman walking a man home so he’s not out alone after curfew any safer than a woman being walked home by a man?

It’s one of those nice “what if” thought experiments but the practicalities make it unworkable.

The BBC article says it is an adaptation of a book so I might try and read the book first before watching. Often with these sorts of things, the book can provide more of the "world building" of the type you mention than the series can.

'Curfew also questions whether women are capable of violent acts, challenging traditional gender norms'

///

Well of course they are as a gazillion MN posters will declare with glee on any thread discussing Male Violence.

But it will never be as frequent, deadly and with the malice that occurs the other way round. And I can't imagine a time where men as a class will ever feel this fear the way many women do.

But thanks for heads up OP

FrostFlowers2025 · 09/10/2024 11:09

What part of this is "dystopian"?

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 09/10/2024 11:11

Bugger it's on Paramount

crackofdoom · 09/10/2024 11:14

How is that a dystopia? 😆

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 09/10/2024 11:14

If they did pander to gender identity, presumably people who switched between male & female would decide at the time whether they were on curfew that night or not. Which is obviously ridiculous.

napody · 09/10/2024 11:22

This has made me wonder... Do we actually have stats on the time of day of MVAWAG? I'm sure there are some hotspots like night buses, but in general, is it a dramatic difference? All my experiences with flashing, harassment etc have been during the day. Lucky enough not to have experienced anything more serious.

SilenceInside · 09/10/2024 11:25

I'd have thought that the ankle tagging would be more effective than a curfew, because you could place men at the scene of any violence and be able to prove they were present, rather than have no idea who was responsible. The curfew just seems like the headline grabbing part.

Sesma · 09/10/2024 11:25

Thanks, I will watch this, looks like the whole series comes tomorrow, though check to make sure before subscribing so anyone wanting to watch it there may be a free trial of a week.

NPET · 09/10/2024 11:42

Oh such a curfew SOUNDS wonderful -
but of course it couldn't work with men claiming they "identify as female"!!

teawamutu · 09/10/2024 11:51

Hoardasurass · 09/10/2024 10:55

I expect they will be. Or there will be a sad scene where it's made very clear that this is unfair.

mojinga · 09/10/2024 11:53

There was a thread about a male curfew, it went down well (it didn’t).
