Mr Cleverly was asked for his opinion on teenagers socially transitioning without their parents’ knowledge, at a Conservative party conference fringe event.

He said “childhood, adolescence and puberty is really confusing, hard and difficult” for most people.

Children should not ‘dictate’ gender ID to their parents, Cleverly says

Mr Cleverly compared the slow development of humans brains with deer, which he said are ‘pretty much ready to rock and roll’ within hours of birth.

“I clearly missed the memo when we collectively decided that children dictate to adults and adults don’t teach children, because that strikes me as a bit of a recipe for disaster."

Never a truer word was spoke.

TERF!

Pah! They're in opposition now. What does it matter what they say/think?

Runor · 01/10/2024 19:29

It really matters! The views of the leader of the opposition could give this a lot of sunlight - or not. Plus, the more people say this in public, the more people feel able to say it in their own lives

Anastomosisrex · 01/10/2024 19:54

We badly need a good opposition, this is what they are for!

Labour were useless at it.

Forester1 · 01/10/2024 19:58

Yes they are in opposition but it means that things can’t be passed through parliament on this without it being noticed / reported if they challenge.

lostoldname · 02/10/2024 00:46

Lets hope of he becomes leader of the opposition his thoughts on his wife and rohipnol as “joked” about at a domestic violence event don’t influence policy.

Thanks for posting this as I couldn't remember which male degenerate had said this.

And somehow makes his statement about biological reality seem a superficial posture.

And really sad that women's sex based rights and gender critical views aren't promoted by just at averagely decent men, if there is such a thing.

It does matter a lot - because the job of opposition is to hold the governmemt to account and to press them on issues.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 02/10/2024 09:16

Wasn't he just Home Secretary a few months ago? Did he raise any concerns then eg around police recording of crimes? Did he raise this issue of children during his (admittedly extremely brief) time as education secretary? Or did he say this instead when asked about trans rights “I am a Conservative because I believe in personal choice, personal freedom, personal responsibility, and I think this is the natural evolution of those principles. If a sexual predator wishes to enter a toilet to attack a woman, there’s no need to have any recognition or certificate to do so, that can happen already. If that’s what we’re worried about, we should look at ways of protecting women, rather than dance around the issue and try to make an already-difficult issue even more difficult.”

I find it very hard to take seriously these Tories who are now saying "someone needs to do something about this!" as if they weren't in a position of power until very very recently.
I'd apply this to a range of issues tbh.

RedToothBrush · 02/10/2024 11:55

Remember when NOONE would talk about this in parliament.

Now we have MPs who are willing to. Even in opposition that makes a difference between it legitimatises the conversation and people can go 'oh well did you hear such and such, well I don't like the Tories but...'

That MATTERS.

Datun · 02/10/2024 13:23

It's a really a good thing that it's now topical.

But I also agree that they're all bloody bandwagon jumpers hitting what they think is the zeitgeist.

I'm glad they're doing it, but their reasons not so much.

Women have made this into a political issue. And if it becomes a hot potato, even better. Politicians will stop pussyfooting around the edges.

Runor · 02/10/2024 14:07

Yep, and I’m not going to be too critical of someone who has actually changed their mind - I wish Starmer would!

IwantToRetire · 02/10/2024 16:53

And the problem is the only (high profile) Tory who was talking about women's sex based right, and seemed genuine and did more than talk was Kemi Badenoch. But she now seems to have adopted an over the top campaign style to try and get selected Tory leader, and I suspect will backfire on her.

The Tory members may like it, but Tory MPs who will decide the final 2 will make sure she's not on the list because they will think a woman who speaks her mind is a GE vote loser, let alone a Black woman who speaks her mind.

(And of course some of what she has recently said seems more than a little extreme Grin )
