Report suggests people who view indecent images of children shouldn't be prosecuted

This is so naive. Haven't they learnt from the last failure to 'treat' rapists. Men are aroused by images by viewing images of children being abused don't have life skills problems.

I haven't read the whole report.

  • a pre-charge scheme should be piloted for individuals who have viewed indecent images of children and do not have a relevant criminal record, focussing on improving life skills. Failure to complete the scheme could result in prosecution;

New JUSTICE Working Party Report - Prosecuting Sexual Offences - JUSTICE

On 10th June 2019, JUSTICE launches its latest working party report, Prosecuting Sexual Offences, chaired by HH Peter Rook QC. Recent years have seen a surge in sexual offence allegations. The uncovering of non-recent crimes, a rise in reporting, shift...

I've not read it but I suspect naivety doesn't come into it.

Wonder how influential this group are? That report is from 2019.

However, there seems to be a push amongst (male?) politicians to decriminalise child sex offences. Way back when Starmer was DPP he took part in the Sentencing Council meetings that removed prison as a sentence for certain child sex offences. It's why we keep seeing male predators getting off with a derisory punishment:

It's an odd recommendation as the others seem reasonable, with a theme around improving things for vulnerable witnesses.

Anastomosisrex · 26/09/2024 22:04

The main gist of that seems to have a subtext going 'charging and processing all this is expensive, the courts and prisons are fucked, channel this lot somewhere else cheaper, faster and less hassle and make it look like the progressive option'.

Life skills? If it wasn't so enraging it would be funny. Suuuure, perverts look at kiddie porn because they lack life skills. What a giant crock of manure. It's probably just a scheme to save the court system money. So called "life skills" classes cost a lot less than trial and incarceration.

Can you picture how these classes would go for pedos? Imagine there is a big poster of a woman on the wall. The perverts are told; "Okay guys, this is a woman. You can have sex with women and here's how." Then they are given pick up artist style tips. Meanwhile, the perverts are playing pocket pool while having child rape fantasies. 🤮

Exactly the impression I got.

Sorry didn't realise it was from 2019, I got it from Dr Em on X.
Dame Vera Baird was on the group so it seems well respected and other recommendations seem ok.
What gets me is someone with 3000 images and no record is treated like it's a first offence , it isn't it's 3000 offences

How is paying someone else to rape a child less of a crime than raping a child yourself? It makes no difference to the traumatised child. Watching images of child abuse is not a trivial offence.

This is an illuminating and depressing read from Janice Turner about the Huw Edwards trial which I think is relevant here?
https://archive.li/VZicI
Excerpts:

"Why? Because if we jailed all such men (and it is almost always men) we would need not just a few extra cells but a vast new prison estate. There are 850 arrests a month for child abuse image offences and, according to the child safety institute Childlight, 1.8 million British men have admitted to viewing such material online."

"The problem is not just too big for the criminal justice system to absorb but too endemic for most of us to comprehend: your old boss, your friend’s husband (who seemed such a great guy), the man who announced the Queen’s death are secretly aroused by grotesque crimes."
