Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I presume that is Michael Cole standing, red faced and bellowing, behind him in the photo. Don't you just already know him so well, and what he sounds like. Depressingly familiar.

“Pompous shitblast”
I am incorporating this excellent phrase into my repertoire

Yeah that was good, along with "no emission".

It is an excellent column, as are most of her columns, but unfortunately I read it and thought "But aren't The Guardian also enablers, every time they don't report a sex attack on a woman or a girl when the person responsible is trans, because it doesn't fit in with their apparent worldview?

"And every time they run a column, like Zoe Williams' pieces, that dismisses the threat trans woman pose to women in prisons and neglects to mention that most trans women retain their penis and that most trans people in prison are there for sexual or violent crimes, aren't they also guilty of dismissing women's voices and experiences?"

Marina, to the best of my knowledge, has never voiced an opinion on this aspect of women's rights. Which for someone who is never shy of expressing her opinion on most things, is unusual.

Sadly, very unsurprising.

Some quotes:

“I shall leave it to readers to decide whether Michael, a former journalist, has somehow forgotten about all the allegations of sexual impropriety made during Fayed’s lifetime that he personally batted away – or whether he is simply the worst publicist ever for having zero clue about any of his client’s alleged … what is the word? … “vulnerabilities”. Given that Tom Bower’s unauthorised biography, which detailed several allegations of sexual assault, came out while Cole was specifically charged with handling Fayed’s publicity, his lack of curiosity/memory seems sensationally remarkable.“

When you see the vast scale of it all, “entourage” sounds too wan a word for this motley crew of enablers, enforcers and concealers, and for all the other motley crews that surrounded “larger than life” men, from Michael Jackson to Harvey Weinstein to Jimmy Savile. I prefer to think of such set-ups as the sex-case industrial complex.

Fayed’s isn’t even the only one in the current news cycle. “

“I wasn’t surprised that Cassie had long been telling the truth, despite Diddy’s serial denials. What took my breath away was what the location implied – the sheer number of people who must have been involved in justice not being served. What exactly is the process for covering up a filmed incident of serious assault by an international star in the corridor of a hotel owned by a major international chain? Let’s just say I imagine Diddy’s lot are quite familiar with it. But think of the hotel side. There are CCTV images – it is a whole department’s job to monitor CCTV. Were the management informed? Where were the police? Quite the mystery.“

The sex-case industrial complex is a place where everyone has their job, a whole interconnected corrupt society that regularly comes into contact with actual society – a boring place of rules and boundaries – but only in order to take what it wants and spin off back into the lawless ether again.”

Marina Hyde is on point as always.

Love Marina Hyde, she's so adept at writing an article that tells the story but with no legal come backs on The Guardian.

JoodyBlueToo · 25/09/2024 11:28

What @Igmum and @jcakey said. If a journalist known for writing about women's rights ignores this issue I hold them in much lower regard than I did previously. Marina Hyde is a wonderful wordsmith, but I don't respect her courage and I don't see any in her public expression. I mean, who is going to argue with this article? It is easy to say.
