I can't get on Twitter - can anyone confirm that there is going to be similar event outside Manchester's German embassy please?

Don't think there is one, from what I can see? Looks like London and Edinburgh.

German Missions in the United Kingdom

There are two German missions in the United Kingdom: The Embassy in London and the Consulate General in Edinburgh. Please make use of the map below to check which of the two missions is responsible for you.

@duc748 thanks. Think I've got confused with the Honorary Consul.

Signalbox · 31/10/2024 12:56

Just bumping this event as it's on tomorrow. 1st November.

Maerchentante · 31/10/2024 17:43

Just seen an X-Post saying there will be world wide protests at 5 past 12 tomorrow outside German embassies as well as in the "Government district" in Berlin.
It is just ridiculous that from tomorrow I could be fined up to 10K Euro if I call a guy in a dress a man.

Maerchentante · 01/11/2024 18:58

I've just seen a clip of the protest at the German Embassy -Thank You to everyone who went there and protested.
German News reported more about the SBG today than they did at any point before, mostly praising the law. On the radio it was basically "Oh, isn't this great???", on the news I watched earlier they gave a lot of room to "Vanessa" and only two sentences to a critic of the new law. Also a bit of talk about "assigned at birth", which is nonsense.
Honi soit qui mal y pense.

IwantToRetire · 02/11/2024 01:34

In the mean time Reem Alsalem who is being kept pretty busy with all these countries falling in line with TRAs has issued a statement.

Germany: Gender self-ID law fails to address implications for women and girls

I really like the "Herr is never Her" poster

Maerchentante · 06/11/2024 20:35

So, the current German government, who are responsible for this mess of a law, are finished.
New election likely in the first half of 2025 rather than September.

I noticed that, too, very little mention of the critical aspects in the media; it was very imbalanced and bad reporting to present only one side in 90% of the article and then add at the end: "Critics say...." without even explaining the critic properly (possibly because they haven't understood it).

There was one article in The Critic online about the protests in Berlin. But "The Critic" has a strange mix of articles, some very thoughtful and others rather libertarian leaning.

So, the current German government, who are responsible for this mess of a law, are finished.
New election likely in the first half of 2025 rather than September.

They didn't break up over this law, though, more because the liberal party's finance minister has been stirring the pot for months, if not longer.
It was very irresponsible to break up this mediocre government today, where on the wave of the US results the European far right are dancing around the fire.

Furthermore, crashing the goverment before christmas will make for reduced consumer confidence and less sales in the face of uncertainty, not too smart thinking for a finance minister (he studied political science and law, he's not an economist) as this will impact "the economy".

It is still possible that within the current parliament a new coalition of social democrats, conservatives (and greens) could be formed. Under the German system, new elections are then not necessary.
However, should there be early elections, the liberals who broke the coalition (intentionally) might not find themselves in the next parliament, just as they had to leave some parliaments of the German countries ("Bundesländer") in recent elections because they might not reach the minimum 5% of votes to enter parliament.

If there is a new coalition with the conservatives, they might start to demand alterations to the self-id law, equally with the Sahra Wagenknecht-party.

I have to say I was expecting a bit more action by the conservative parties regarding the challenging of the law before Nov 1st. In the article by The Critic, Rona Duwe by Let Women Speak is cited. She mentioned that the opposing politicians did a lot more blustering than action afterwards.

ConstructionTime · 23/11/2024 15:25

Very entertaining news today on a related topic:
The new coalition in the German state of Thuringia published their coalition contract and the goals they wish to achieve.
The Green Party, which didn't reach enough votes to be in parliament at all (missed the minimum 5%) this time, criticized the new coalition amongst other things for "failing to address the falling birthrate".

I guess if you medically "transition" youth with puberty blockers and support no-debate "treatment" without any other options like watchful waiting or therapy do deal with the dysmorphia, you will get a lot of sterile adults.

As feeling trans does not change your orientation towards women or men, a lot of people might later decide to have children after all but cannot do so anymore, because their health and organs are destroyed; unless you support the "hire a womb"-industry, too.

Huh! Haven’t most green organisations campaigned for years for people to have fewer children?

ConstructionTime · 23/11/2024 16:40

@Signalbox
possibly, but this is a country in eastern Germany, all of which experienced a huge migration in direction to western Germany or Berlin (or to other countries). A majority of the countries in the east have huge problems with aging population and thinning infrastructure, which exacerbate each other. It's like typical rural problems in an intense variant.
Of course there are some bigger cities with universities, workplaces and industry, too, like Leipzig, but in some of the eastern states there are long distances to hospitals and GPs or supermarkets for example.

It's possibly not in the whole country of Thuringia, but the rural parts only. They also fail to attract families to move there.

ConstructionTime · 23/11/2024 16:49

Germany overall has had a growing population in the past decades but the distribution is very uneven. After reunification, a good chunk of the population of former East-Germany moved away.
If the eastern countries could get enough incomers from other parts of Germany, the problem of unfilled workplaces and infrastructure would be easily solved but it's not happening.
I do agree that it's a bit of a contradiction from them, though.

lcakethereforeIam · 23/11/2024 18:02

I don't understand why they aren't asking the tw to step up. Twaw and all that 🤡

ConstructionTime · 19/04/2025 17:47

Bringing back the topic to check what's happening after the Supreme Court UK decision.
There is a former MP, Valerie Wilms, who was a member of the Greens but left them due to their stance on Self-ID. The person is a TW but transitioned so early (in the 90s) and never said a word about it that it didn't register in public (so V. Wilms said)
Wilms published a biography and revealed being a TW and that the Green party's stance is not hers.
It's also mentioned that early next year there is supposed to be an evaluation of the Self-ID law, so a new possibility to bring the discussion to the forefront again.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2025/04/18/german-mp-trans-secret-gender-identity-bundestag/

I actually hadn't heard of the person but now that I saw the article in the Telegraph, I checked some news in German and it is covered, too.

https://www.deutschlandfunk.de/vermutlich-erste-transfrau-im-bundestag-kritisiert-selbstbestimmungsgesetz-100.html

In the pro-woke TAZ, the article about the SC decision was remarkably calm.
It was very factual, except for the final paragraph:
https://taz.de/Urteil-in-Grossbritannien/!6079260&s=supreme%2Bcourt/

There the text refers to the topic of passports:
"Die Debatte, ob Transrechte zum Nachteil von Frauenrechten gehen, wird in Großbritannien besonders engagiert geführt, weil das Land kein Meldewesen kennt und keine Personalausweise mit Geschlechtseintrag. Viele Transpersonen leben somit einfach im anderen Geschlecht, ohne sich das je amtlich bestätigen lassen zu müssen. Dies kann zu Problemen führen, die in Ländern mit Ausweispflicht nicht auftreten"

my translation:
The debate, whether trans right impinge on women's rights, has feelings running high in Great Britain, because the country does not have a citizen's registry and no "gender" (it should be sex) listed in passports /IDs.
Many trans people thus "live as the opposite gender" without any official documents. This can lead to problems that do not happen in countries with mandatory ID".

Of course that's wrong, and the writer did not understand the ruling.

Germany has mandatory birth certificate, mandatory ID and everyone has to be registered at their place of residence so that the local administration knows how many people live where.

The problems regarding equality and representation and access to women's spaces are pretty much the same as in UK.

ConstructionTime · 19/04/2025 18:01

Feminist magazine Emma reporting, too:
https://www.emma.de/artikel/supreme-court-urteilt-geschlecht-zaehlt-341745

mentioned FWS, Kathleen Stock, scrapping of Self-ID in the Netherlands...

The last paragraph says that the conservative CDU campaigned on revoking Self-ID but it didn't get through the coalition talks with the social democrats.
They compromised on the above mentioned "evaluation" next year.

I hope this ruling will feature in the evaluation, too, not legally, as that's not possible, but it is a good blueprint as the overall concepts - equality vs non-discrimination - are similarly at odds in Germany.

ConstructionTime · 26/04/2025 16:57

Another update on two current topics:

1 The German state of Schleswig-Holstein is again trying to shove "gender identity" into the German state's foundational law, the "Grundgesetz", from which flows all other legislation.
https://www.ronalyze.de/p/the-german-federal-state-schleswig

That would mean that people would have more difficulty to bring up the same topic as FWS did, that Self-ID and Equality Law in Germany cannot cover the same ground as they contradict each other.

However, it's possible that the "reevaluation" of Self-ID by the new government , which was announced later than this article was posted, could stop this, but people need to keep being aware.

2 Rona Duwe, this blogger and activist, created a brochure which laid out problematic aspects of child and youth medical / surgical transition
It was put on the list of publications that are required to be put out of circulation due to "endangering youth". They then can only be handed out on request to over 18 year olds.
Usually media are only put on this list if they show extreme violence or other wholly unsuitable things which are against the law (for under 18).

(which is where you can see that this law is now toothless as you can see anything on social media anyways, where media oversight can't keep up).

She and another campaigner went to court to sue against this categorization, but they lost. Due to finances, Rona Duwe will stop for now but there is a second lawsuit with the same topic going on by a fellow GC which will continue.
