Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Ben Elton - authentic stupidity

mids2019 · 10/09/2024 00:07

He's a grumpy old man essentially but made some telling jokes about gender identity for newer generatiosn. Have a potted history of feminism with the conclusion gen z might do all the good with with a fixation on trans rights. Some giggle moments with sex allocation at both not being too hard 'boy sick girl fanny'.

He could have gone a bit further but maybe doesn't need the grief. Nice to see a bit of mockery of the teams movement in a non aggressive way using a bit of mockery. Pity the guys old really like the audience but fun.

Why is it a shame that he's old?

BeretInParis · 10/09/2024 00:15

And how old does one have to be to qualify as 'old'?

mids2019 · 10/09/2024 00:19

Apologies for the old.....but ageist. Good comedy though and very clever. Felt like he wanted to say more but didn't want to step over a line.Basically said he want going to be on the right side of history.

I'm baffled by this bit: "gen z might do all the good with with a fixation on trans rights". Could you explain what it should have said/meant?

mids2019 · 10/09/2024 00:44

It's a point (sorry for the typos) that feminism is under threat with newer generations because of a fixation with trans rights.

This is like an Amazon review of poor OLD Ben Elton 🤣

SnowFrogJelly · 10/09/2024 00:49

He's not old Hmm

Westea · 10/09/2024 02:04

Translation?

Catsmere · 10/09/2024 02:52

You think 65 is old?

He wrote a book called Identity Crisis some years ago (one of many on various topics, including social commentary).

I don't think he's new to the debate

Mittens67 · 08/10/2024 08:44

I am afraid your style of writing is extremely hard to understand.

DeanElderberry · 08/10/2024 09:06

Thanks Mittens, I was afraid it was just that I was too old.

I loved that novel! Very clever.

TheHereticalOne · 08/10/2024 09:44

Oh thank God, I thought you were saying he'd been captured. I haven't yet read Identity Crisis (must do that!) but I read many of his earlier novels when I was younger and always found them very incisive. I'd have been extremely disappointed if, after all that, he couldn't see what was going on here!

SnapdragonToadflax · 08/10/2024 09:50

I was very puzzled by the OP too, Ben Elton seemed like one of the least likely people to 'believe'! He's a smart, funny man. Age is irrelevant - are you very young, OP? Do you realise you'll be 65 too, one day?

Completely understand him not wanting to fully out himself as GC, far too much hassle. Mockery is the best way of dealing with it.

That was great.

EauNeu · 08/10/2024 09:57

It's really hard to understand what you're trying to say here. Can you rephrase it for us old fuckers

nietzscheanvibe · 08/10/2024 10:05

Catsmere · 10/09/2024 02:52

You think 65 is old?

65 is old. I know we don't perceive ourselves as old once we get there (I'm 62, but still only about 35 in my head), but 65 is old. 🤷‍♂️

borntobequiet · 08/10/2024 10:08

Old. Ha ha.

Why is it remotely relevant?

point of order -"old" starts at roughly 30 years above my own age and has done since I was a small child, thanks.

Old is, apparently, anyone 15 years or more older than you are. So I'm guessing the OP is under 45.

ChungKing · 08/10/2024 10:19

I'm 36 and I'd consider 65 old, but that doesn't mean I think it's a bad thing to be!

Didn't Ben Elton host that show where the transgender guy whipped his cock out with absolutely no warning 9to me at least)? Surprised he's GC!

My granny used to talk about 'old people' in a very remote and distanced way, when she was in her late 70s - thanks for explaining that, puffyisgood😄

I'd quibble with your maths, though - I think when I was about, say, 17, being over 20 seemed old, boring, staid and settled!

Me three. Sorry OP but your post is obviously in yoof spik and alas, I'm an old woman.
