English Teacher and 'authentic' drag

Not the band, the show on Disney Plus. Funny! In places. They try to tackle 'wokeness' but through the lens of the gay man who wrote it, so there is obviously a fair bit of perhaps unwitting misogyny (always thought that the people with least skin in the game in terms of feminism were gay men, by design).

Anyway, in ep 2 they are talking about upcoming event 'powder puff' which is a tradition where the football lads dress up as cheerleaders for a 'bit'. The LGBTetcetc gang are offended until they decide to do 'authentic' drag, which apparently is fine.

Just me, or is drag, even the 'authentic' kind, exactly the same as lads dressing as cheerleaders to take the piss? What's the difference? Both are bordering on offensive, in fact I feel l like drag is worse, since it's very sexualised and feels nastier than boys just dressing as girls and doing a cheer.

emperor is still naked I think

Not only is the emperor still naked, he's gleefully windmilling at us.

The first time I felt offended, as a woman, by men dressing in drag was when the film 'priscilla queen of the desert came out'. I found their exaggerated, bitchy, tits out/ arse out, portrayal of women extremely offensive and it made me angry. I was 19.
2 years later I lived in Brighton and had to endure constant overt innuendo as a barrista by men portraying their 'feminine' side who came into the coffee place I worked in: 'ooooh look at the way she holds the spout', 'your spout is so hot and frothy', 'how do you make it blow?', 'I bet you love grinding all day don't ya', and on, and on, and on. they were all in their 30's and 40's. I was 21.

I saw a few drag acts in bars there and they were equally vile, both their portrayal of women and the things they said about women.

The whole drag thing is just a cover to send up, be derogatory and demeaning to, and take the piss out of women.

I thought it at 19, and I feel it even more strongly at 50. In 31 years I've only even been witness to things that solidify my first impression at 19.

There didn't seem to be any thought or discussion at to how 'dressing as a girl and pretending to be a cheerleader' was different and lesser to a drag act with a full pair of realistic false breasts. The kids in the show seemed to accept drag as fine but putting on a dress as an insult

The drag act in question was portrayed as a criminal but drag itself was seen as a brilliant thing

I don't really get it. Make it make sense!
