This is utterly horrific. RIP Rebecca Cheptegai.

What with this and the unfolding story of Gisèle Pélicot, I’m finding it very hard to process the depth to which men will sink in their utter depravity just at the moment.

BlackeyedSusan · 05/09/2024 10:55

RIP Rebecca.Flowers

Absolutely appalling news. I heard it this morning, and I just cannot imagine the thought process of a man who would throw petrol on his partner and light her on fire.
My thoughts are with Rebecca's family. I can only hope that her relative fame means that her attacker will be brought to justice.

Unspeakable. RIP Rebecca Cheptegai. I hope her family gets justice.

Devastating. This poor woman.

duc748 · 05/09/2024 13:08

I've always pointed and laughed at the Jeremiahs who said the world is getting worse and worse, but now I think, as far as women are concerned, things really do seem to be going backwards. Not that they were great before, obv.

Kucinghitam · 05/09/2024 13:09

Just awful awful awful. RIP Rebecca Sad

GailBlancheViola · 05/09/2024 13:12

So awful and so, so sad. This brutality of MVAWG is just never ending.

BrickOtter · 05/09/2024 13:13

I read this morning that at least 34% of Kenyan women have been victims of violence. This is such awful news her poor children and family

Grammarnut · 05/09/2024 15:42

RIP a great athlete. I hope the murderer spends the rest of his life in a mean prison cell before entering Hell.

guinnessguzzler · 05/09/2024 15:57

I could hardly believe it when I read this, it is absolutely horrendous. RIP Rebecca.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 05/09/2024 16:13

So sad, so awful. RIP Rebecca.

GoldOnyx · 05/09/2024 19:05

I hadn’t heard about this till this morning. I read it and felt sick. I’m so sorry, Rebecca. RIP. Thank you so much to everyone who has posted the uplifting and positive news stories of women who have been attacked by men and survived. Tracy Otto and Shahina Kunjumuhammed are both incredible women, as was Rebecca. They have amazing strength and courage, and their families and partners sound very impressive too.

Thanks for the update.

'Local media reported that Ndiema had sneaked into Cheptegei's home in western Kenya’s Trans Nzoia county with a five-litre jerry can full of petrol.

Some of the fuel he doused Cheptegei with splashed onto his own body, according to reports. As a result, Ndiema got caught in the fire after he set his former partner alight.

Ndiema was to face charges as police said they were treating Cheptegei's death as murder, with the former boyfriend named as the main suspect.

But now that Ndiema has died, the criminal case has been dropped and an inquest into the two deaths will be opened instead.

Both Ndiema and Cheptegei were admitted to Moi Hospital before their deaths.'

There another article about this in the BBC

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cy4y9pw7vqjo

There are some links to further articles at the bottom. The middle one is broken, it goes to an undoubtedly sad story about a male athlete, although in a way it still works as a metaphor, too often women's stories are broken to centre the menz. The bottom link is grim, but there's a quote which explains so much

"The world has evolved in so many ways. Men have not,"

Activists and athletes carry banners and chant slogans as they march through Eldoret, western Kenya, on September 13, 2024, to demonstrate against the murder of women in Kenya after Rebecca Cheptegei lost her life

The Telegraph has another article

https://archive.ph/s1cL7

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/athletics/2024/09/26/olympian-burnt-to-death-three-female-athletes-killed-kenya/

It's horrific, these predators target them probably when they're little more than children. Having failed themselves they got after girls they think have talent, who can win and whose wealth they can take. Imagine the girls who don't make it. If they're lucky these monsters abandon them, otherwise they get to live with his disappointment. 41% experience DV, what are the odds that none of the perpetrators are police officers. No wonder the police too often fail to help.
