Bumping up.

BetsyM00 · 29/08/2024 12:17

It was covered by their reserves. They're still £17,600 up.

Stingtheory · 29/08/2024 12:51

It appears Bev & Kate are paying themselves £57,000 a year each.

Bev and Kate are both trustees so it wouldn't have been them receiving salaries

It won't just be salary, it'll be laptops / IT hardware (potentially software?), any other office consumables pensions, any insurance, NI contributions etc. Their actual salaries received will be less. There is a cost outside of actual salaries to having employees which fall under 'staff costs'. I think DH had to look at this for some reason (he manages a wide range of people) and his employer was saying 30%+ on top of actual salaries cost but they do some sciencey stuff which might make it more than other companies for insurance / H&S reasons.

It's overly simplistic to take the total sum of 'staff costs' and assume that's all salary, it definitely won't be.

And another fact that undermines an overly simplistic assumption. Trustees generally don't get paid and are voluntary roles. Expenses such as travel may get reimbursed. In theory I can claim for this for my volunteer trustee position but I never claim and see the costs I cover myself in lieu of a donation.

Employee costs =/= salary.

spannasaurus · 29/08/2024 13:17

Trustees note from the accounts confirming that trustees were not paid salaries. (Which they couldn't have done anyway as charity law doesn't allow trustees to receive salaries)

I think they have a CEO?

Igmum · 29/08/2024 15:28

Thanks for posting Coffee. I have some carrots around here that can be planted. They do a great job for not very much money.

Hairyesterdaygonetoday · 29/08/2024 15:39

Looks as if they had to pay huge legal fees to protect their charitable status when Mermaids tried to get it revoked. Given that Mermaids lost their totally unjustified case, why didn’t Mermsids have to pay all LGBA’s costs?

TrainedByDinosaurs · 29/08/2024 17:06

You can’t run any significant charity entirely on volunteers, to have been able to manage with just 2 members of staff with what they’ve had to deal with from Mermaids is extraordinary. Their major people can be seen on their website here https://lgballiance.org.uk/people/

Kate Barker is listed as CEO that will be one salary (not to be confused with Kate Harris who is a trustee). The other member of staff will be her assistant. As others have mentioned staff costs are rather more than just salary and may include temporary staff. I’m pleasantly surprised they are so low.

For anyone who wants the details you can read the accounts in full at

(Merchandise doesn't seem to have been a big earner!)

One major bonus of that case was the opening of the charity commission enquiry into mermaids.

loveyouradvice · 29/08/2024 20:43

thank you - I've planted some carrots and would not have known about this if you hadn't posted (yes of course I knew about the case but hadn't thought much more than being thankful they won)....

popeydokey · 29/08/2024 20:51

Just a note to say people can report any post that calls LGB rights 'disgusting'. Especially by people that have banged on about how same-sex orientation isn't anything to do with being gay, it's the same as racism, etc.

timenowplease · 29/08/2024 21:18

Is 'disgusting' the new 'far right'?

Why didn't they get costs awarded against Mermaids?

MrsOvertonsWindow · 29/08/2024 21:30

Oh Mermaids! Anyone heard the outcome of the Charity Commission investigation following the revelations of their paedophile / porn scandal? Has anyone been held account yet for such a serious safeguarding breach at a charity encouraging children to "change sex"??

spannasaurus · 29/08/2024 21:47

This was posted on X by Barry Wall. Even Mermaids are asking how much longer for enquiry will go on for

It was determined that Mermaids did not have the legal standing to mount the claim, so it was never heard - no-one won or lost.

timenowplease · 29/08/2024 21:18

The proceedings were Mermaids challenging a decision of the Charity Commission to register LGB Alliance as a charity. This was a First-tier Tribunal case. Costs are not usually awarded at this level.

nauticant · 29/08/2024 22:38

We have dismissed this appeal because we have decided that the law does not permit Mermaids to challenge the decision made by the Charity Commission to register LGB Alliance as a charity. We considered the extent of Mermaids’ legal rights and whether they were affected by that decision. Mermaids is a “legal person”, and it is that charity’s legal rights with which we are concerned and not those of the people they support.
