"How male representations of the female form have changed the way women are viewed.'
From tales of ‘toothed vaginas’ to gods with breasts, men have spent millennia vilifying and controlling representations of women. "

Excellent and very pertinent article in the Observer.
Yes there is so much more that unites the sexes rather than divides us, our common humanity for one.

What an interesting life Mineke Schipper has lived, I've saved the link to the 'Women In Proverbs' to dip in to at a later date.

It seems misogyny has been around since the dawn of time

"She sees these stories as an attempt by early civilisations to redress what they saw as the essential unfairness that only women had the power to give life. “It has to do with the lack of balance with what women can do – it’s already too much.”

Have just read it. It does contain the obligatory, but what about trans people (not unexpected given who the journo is), but this is as good a piece as any to explain why men cannot be women.

'Too much, though, has not changed since early myths started to erase women'
I agree, it is very interesting and gives perspective to what hasn't changed, which is pretty much everything. She references the early myth representations that have male creators giving men (themselves) women's reproductive capabilities because they are jealous of or fear them. And then references her interest in what trans identifying males experiences of these capabilities will be.

'Schipper discusses how science could help all genders “share all birth-giving, breastfeeding and other care duties”, and says she looks forward to reading about the experiences of trans individuals and “how their experience of body parts resonates and differs from the experiences of cis- gendered individuals”.'

Nope, not interested.

Then why bother posting?

Didn't Germaine Greer write about this years ago?

Because men will never be able to give birth or breastfeed. Obviously.
