I wasn't sure if this was new information or not.

The Government has today renewed a temporary ban on the sale and supply of puberty-suppressing hormones, known as ‘puberty blockers.’

The continuation of the ban applies to the sale or supply of these drugs, prescribed by private UK-registered prescribers for gender incongruence or dysphoria to under 18s not already taking them.

It also prevents the sale and supply of the medicines from prescribers registered in the European Economic Area or Switzerland for any purposes to those under 18.

The government has also extended the order to cover Northern Ireland, following agreement from the Northern Ireland Executive, to come into effect from the 27 August.

The legislation is available here

If people are unsure how the ban applies to their circumstances, there is further information here

The National Referral Support Service for NHS Children and Young People’s Gender Services provides details of organisations that people can contact for help and support.

The General Pharmaceutical Council has published a resource for pharmacy professionals to support them in providing information, support and services to children and young people with gender incongruence or dysphoria.

Anyone in need of urgent support can contact NHS 111 and choose the mental health option. There is also advice on getting mental health support available on the NHS website.

Utterly deranged.

If the comments on the 2 Reddit threads linked to are anything to go by, none of them have learnt a thing from the Cass Report or any of the many other concerns that have been raised and addressed about taking 'puberty blockers'.

Lets hope the government ban them permanently, and soon.

DrSpartacular · 23/08/2024 14:41

Fingers crossed it becomes a permanent ban soon 🤞🏼

It might be worth getting NI put in the title @Helleofabore to avoid a double thread - I came & checked before I posted, but some people may not twig, especially if they’re newer to FWR.

Anyway, here’s the BBC coverage.

BelTel have yet to put anything out - but here’s the link to their article on the 12th of August, discussing the loophole & the plans there were to exploit it.

I had an idea that Mike Nesbitt would be sensible if given the opportunity. My big worry was that SF would block him, so I'm pleasantly surprised that Michelle O'Neill signed off on it.

I imagine Alliance will take the head staggers, but there's little can be done about that.

Thank you Helle.

I am a bit surprised as I kind of thought the tanker would be turned right back round by Labour. So, a thumbs up from me.

I think Wes Streeting has been looking for an opportunity to reverse ferret on some of this stuff for a while now. He can see that the right side of history is actually the wrong side of history.

I think Keir Starmer can see it as well.

My main worry now is that they'll protect kids but not women.

NitroNine · 23/08/2024 19:25

BelTel Coverage is now available.

Sinn Féin being fairly sensible it seems, but Gerry Carroll has some neck on him 🤦‍♀️

The absolute madness, too, of saying politicians should have no part in health care in a country with socialised medicine! Moreover, politicians made the decision guided by medics & the best available evidence.

Igmum · 23/08/2024 19:45

This is good news and should stymie Mermaids but oh my @Ereshkigalangcleg how on earth can so many people want to poison vulnerable children? How can they seriously not get it? And why on earth do they paint us as transphobic for not wanting children to suffer? They are seriously on another planet.

They think the Cass Report should be ignored, at best.

I'm amazed that they got this past SF and Alliance, but it's certainly good news. The UUP overall have made some decent decisions while running the Department of Health (allowing for the fact that the whole system needs massive reform).

You can't make this shit up.

Strangers are telling kids not speak to journalists about what the adults are telling them to do and about their concerns. 😶

This from Hansard Twitter

"The Govt has laid another important regulation today to extend the restriction imposed by the previous Govt on the private sale or supply of puberty blockers. But it extends to Northern Ireland for the first time."

"The Govt has used emergency powers in the Medicines Act 1968 to extend the ban for three months while it consults on whether to make the ban permanent. mattengland3011 anticipated this in his blog explaining the legislation & accountability to Parliament."

Here is the link that they mentioned

https://www.hansardsociety.org.uk/blog/puberty-blockers-delegated-legislation

Puberty blockers legislation: has the parliamentary calendar undermined accountability?

9 August 2024

"The three-month limit means the emergency Order, which came into force on 3 June, expires on 2 September 2024 – the day both Houses return after the Summer recess. There is thus no time for MPs or Peers to consider that Order before it expires."

"Furthermore, having been in force for three months it will expire well before the statutorily required 40-day scrutiny deadline of 12 October."

"Does this matter? Previous Parliaments entrusted Ministers with powers in the National Health Service Act 2006 and the Medicines Act 1968 to exercise their judgement regarding the sale and supply of medicinal products. However, Parliament retained the power to scrutinise how Ministers exercise their judgement within the scope of the powers granted to them. The 40-day scrutiny period is the official route – set out in statute – for MPs to hold ministers to account for whatever actions they may take in the exercise of those powers delegated to them that are subject to the ‘made negative’ scrutiny procedure."

"That statutory obligation to scrutinise is frustrated when an SI is in force, but the scrutiny clock is paused – as in this case for many weeks at a time - due to the exigencies of the parliamentary sitting calendar. It undermines the principle of parliamentary accountability."

My take on this is that they have extended it to allow debate and investigation. Let's see how that happens. I hope that it includes lots of bright light and balance.

Edited

I think the fact they are extending the block so it can be debated is positive. Pushes inserting GI in to laws have traditionally not been concerned with debate, consultation and adhering to rules and procedures so this must action in itself is a break from that (and lets face the underhandedness was how this got at far as it did)?

I hope so too. I hope that it is a frank and open debate.

The comments there are absolutely disgusting, and horrifying

Yeah, did anyone else see the 'he's going to pay. They are all going to pay.' comment. Bloody scary.

They in some fundamental way don't see the distinction between adult and child as valid, so don't see children as needing protection.

I think this is due to the groups of people who are likely to be posting.

One is essentially children themselves, who for obvious reasons are unable to know they have vulnerabilities that adulthood and life experience will remove.

And the other group posting on these types of forums is men who are not invested in putting child safeguarding in any way.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 25/08/2024 16:10

It appears that numerous LGBT charities set the "standard" by ignoring age boundaries and group 13 year olds in with 20 something adults. For groups, advice and policy / guidance.
So bloody dangerous

Amazing the gender critical sub Reddit was removed but this one is allowed to stray. Do people even report it?

StainlessSteelMouse · 27/08/2024 12:21

Good post on Slugger O'Toole by a pharmacist. Pretty decent discussion in the comments too.

It really helps to get cool-headed pieces like this out in NI. I think for the liberal-ish bit of civil society that hangs around Slugger, and the non-DUP/TUV bits of the political spectrum, there are a lot who haven't followed this in any detail, assume that it's a subset of gay rights, and are inclined to oppose whatever the "right wing" bogeymen of the moment are saying. Getting them to see that there might be an issue worth discussing is the main problem.

I just stumbled across that BBC article - as you said, better than usual, but as that’s a trip-hazard of a bar… 🫤

Courtesy of the trusty BelTel:

• The Mayor of Belfast losing the absolute run of himself at said protest [27/08/24] 😬

StainlessSteelMouse · 04/09/2024 19:51

Knowing what Alliance are like, I'm assuming their thought process was "let's make that wee gay lad the mayor, he'll make us look modern and sure he won't do anything embarrassing"

NitroNine · 05/09/2024 12:10

I’m still a wee bit boggled by the protests down south. As if the NHS is going to stage a hostile takeover of the HSE. It’s so SO tenuous the whole “well we’ve Sinn Féin here & the NI First Minister is ALSO from Sinn Féin so…” 🤦‍♀️
