A new study published in Archives of Sexual Behaviour reveals that an overwhelming majority of Taiwanese respondents strongly oppose gender self-identification for transgender women.

Good to know thanks, but does the boxer know his fellow Taiwanese think he is a cheat?

lcakethereforeIam · 20/08/2024 22:07

Doesn't this make the Taiwanese all far right/fascists?

StickItInTheFamilyAlbum · 20/08/2024 22:18

Omlettes - It seems plausible that the Taiwanese boxer has a VSD and that was not an area that the survey evaluated, afaict.

Gender self-identification (transgender) is not permitted in most Asian countries. In Taiwan, individuals recognized as transgender must meet requirements mandated by the Gender Recognition Act. Currently, lifting the requirement for proof of sex-reassignment surgery is pending. The aim of this study was to survey a large sample of Taiwanese to gain a better understanding of the general population’s attitudes toward gender self-identification… Although there were significant differences in scores between parents and non-parents, and those ≤ 35 years versus ≥ 36 years (p < .01), all strongly disagreed with gender self-identification. Given the majority of respondents were females, survey findings should be regarded with caution. Public acceptance of gender self-identification requires support from its residents. Our findings suggest that gender self-identification has not begun to approach even a moderate level of public support among survey respondents.

A limitation is the predominantly female sample which may not fully reflect the broader population’s view.

Who cares what women think eh? It's not as if self ID giving men access to female spaces affects women at all. Let's ask men what they think.

"A surprising 91.6% of participants disagreed with all 14 survey statements, indicating strong resistance to the idea that transgender women should be granted rights and access typically afforded to cisgender women. For instance, only 6.1% agreed that transgender women should use women’s public toilets, and [emphasis mine] [only] 4.2% supported their participation in women’s sporting events."

Given the majority of respondents were females, survey findings should be regarded with caution.

Quite. They should try again and find out what the men think instead.

They did find out what the men think. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. The men don’t give a flying fuck.

The women certainly do care and care enough to fill in the questionnaire with their VALID OPINION.

Very good that they asked the question, though. So often the cry is “how do you know?” Or “there is no evidence” so credit to them for that.

This:

The aim of this study was to survey a large sample of Taiwanese to gain a better understanding of the general population’s attitudes toward gender self-identification

is followed by this:

Given the majority of respondents were females, survey findings should be regarded with caution.

"Caution", that is, in making inferences about the views of the general population

The methodology section says the survey was issued through "An association comprised of parents, women, and adolescents"...suggesting that the vehicle chosen for the survey was likely to attract more women. This is a reported limitation of the survey, not a discrediting of women's views.

I suspect if you spelled out what legal self-ID actually means, and made every adult in the country respond, there would not be a single country in the world where a majority of the population would support it.

The only reason it has been brought into law in so many places is because most people either don’t know, don’t care or don’t believe as it’s such a ridiculous concept and so under reported that they think it couldn’t possibly be true.

Interesting - makes me wonder whether the boxing champ’s recent success might not be that well received back home? I appreciate he is not transgender, but the underlying issue of being a male in a woman’s sport is nonetheless pertinent? I’d love to know what the Taiwanese public sentiment was/is. If this report is accurate, I’d suspect it was not exactly warm - which may explain why he and his team kept a very low profile on this issue throughout?
