Men that don't know what a cervix is

So David Lammy is probably the most well known example, but the whole boxing fiasco has been quite illuminating in illustrating how many men don't have a clue what a cervix is (whilst arguing with absolute conviction that IK has one). Some men also seem to think that it is something that is checked for at birth 🙄

Here is the latest example I've seen

For those not on X, it's journalist Benjamin Butterworth mansplaining about cervixes to two exasperated women.

I must ask my oh when he gets back if he knows what a cervix is. I suspect he has a vague idea. Do the men in your life know what the cervix is?

It's a good point, my understanding of what the prostate does is vague at best. I think it has lots of nerves/pleasure receptors and maybe it produces hormones? And if it swells up it can block the urethra?

But, crucially, I wouldn't dream of lecturing a man about it with my uncertain knowledge, and certainly not on air.

Just to follow up on this lol... I asked dh if he knows what his prostate does and he responded with these same vague snippets. I told him it produces fluid for his semen and he hadn't known either.

I said in an impressed way, does that mean you know more about the cervix than the prostate?

He said yes because he was there when I was having dc1 [ie trying and failing to give birth through it]. He said any Dad would know.

I don't think he sees this as a feminist issue, more that the cervix is something you have to actively deal with and get stuff done with [I mean, birth] whereas the prostate is just left to get on with things.

No not a gotcha, clever or otherwise. Of course the word 'cervix' used alone is most often taken to refer to the neck of the uterus. Men don't have a uterus (!) so they don't have that sort of cervix.

But language is a tricky beast. And, for example, I imagine that fellow Lammy explaining, some time in the future, that ("of course"!) he has a cervix; he always meant 'cervix' in the sense in which it's used to refer to the neck through which his spinal cord passes. We all have one of those cervixes, women and men alike. (He didn't mean that; he's just ignorant. But he's smart.)

Be careful with claims depending on meaning and sense. Just saying.

(No need to Google stuff you know already, btw. And also I advise other search engines, ones that don't track their users so assiduously.)

Mind you don’t get a crick in your cervix, stretching like that.

A smart politician would try to pass the buck, claim he got it wrong because he was badly briefed.
I think, with luck, we will see a lot of this kind of squirming from politicians - also from the currently young adults around us who want to 'educate us'- in the future
it will be most entertaining, and require huge amounts of grace from us

I agree about it requiring grace.

Ultimately though I think it's just true. Few politicians have a scientific background, and therefore understand how rigorously to sift through differing sources of information. (Sorry if that makes me seem a snob).

If someone pops up claiming to be an expert in "gender studies" (sorry, snob, etc) your average politician will swallow it all and consider himself Briefed. Their aides will have assured them that these are The Experts to listen to.

Then when many angry women try to explain he's wrong and an idiot, he'll run back to those gender experts saying "have you made me look a fool?" And the experts will say "no those are just extremist bigots" and he'll be, for a bit, none the wiser...

Unfortunately it doesn't occur to them to look into a range of sources, and to inspect the reliability of those sources. They should, though.

Afterwards they will genuinely feel aggrieved for being badly briefed.

Back to Buttergasp for a moment. It's always amused me that Little OJ and Buttergasp, who are notionally on the same side, have a long-running feud. I don't know what started it, but I do enjoy it when they start sniping at each other, as in eg:

LOJ doesn't approve of Buttergasp appearing on GB News. I think that's how it started.

Angry koalas sound like vuvuzelas 😍 and also notoriously smooth brained.

Did you read ANY of the thread or think at all before posting? For absolute clarity that "Lammy fellow" is our current home secretary a position of power and influence.

I've posted the quote below, he isn't talking about his neck! Or any kind of cervix that all humans have. He's talking about the one that hangs around with the womb and the ovaries, you know the cunty kind! And Lammy feels qualified to opine that it's something you "have" following medical and drug intervention! How does one "have a cervix?" Does it grow, does someone sneak it in during the night like a reverse tooth fairy? More questions now than when he made his Ill considered, inaccurate but hysterical comment.

I don't know if it's transphobic, but it it's not, accurate, Nick. I mean, obviously, it's probably the case that only, that trans women don't have ovaries. But a cervix, I understand, is something that you can have, following various procedures and hormone treatment and all the rest of it.

Edited for clarity

This thread prompted me to ask DH if he knew what a cervix was.

He puzzled for a bit before admitting 'No, not really ' He does know he hasn't got one though.

I'd strongly suspect he has no clue what or where his prostate is either though.

newtlover · 21/08/2024 11:33

'various procedures' lol
I also asked DP about the prostate, he knew it was around the urethra (I think that's right) but could only hazard that it secreted hormones
