Crappy situation, again, for female athletes, but at least there's balance in the article. I can't believe I'm actually seeing both viewpoints represented fairly (imho) on the BBC.

Valentina Petrillo: Italian sprinter set to be first transgender Paralympian

Valentina Petrillo is set to become the first openly transgender athlete to compete at the Paralympic Games, having been selected to represent Italy in Para-athletics in Paris.

Thanks for link.

I've sent positive feedback to BBC Online regarding this article and also did the same for the earlier one by Sofia Bettiza. We need to try to create a positive feedback loop!

Italian Olympic committee trying to have its cake and eat it.

It is clear they don't care about women whilst complaining about men in female sports.

OldCrone · 13/08/2024 15:16

In a previous interview with the BBC, Petrillo said she knew she was a woman from as young as nine.

What utter nonsense. A nine-year-old boy who 'knows' he's a woman? Why does anyone take this stuff seriously?

"I'm not the energetic person I was. In the first months of transition I put on 10kg. I can't eat the way I did before, I became anaemic, my haemoglobin is low, I'm always cold, I don't have the same physical strength, my sleep isn't what it was, I have mood swings.
"I'm not the same as before."

Just because a man has fucked about with his hormones and made himself ill it doesn't mean he's become a woman. It means he's become an unwell, less fit man. Men don't have the right to compete against women just because they've made themselves ill so they're no longer competitive against other men.

PatatiPatatras · 13/08/2024 15:31

Oh! I think you've nailed it.

It's a bit like reverse doping.
I can't take T to achieve more in sport - so what if I took, E instead and made myself achieve less?

No one would ever think you did it on purpose and E is not a controlled since it isn't performance enhancing. Just like no one ever believes people cut bits of themselves off to become paralympians.

It's bloody genius.

CocoapuffPuff · 13/08/2024 15:51

The quote makes it sound like he's in the paralympics because of the impact the trans medical treatment has had on his health, rather than the vision problem he actually qualifies through.

Hmm, makes you wonder who made Carini apologise re Khelif doesn't it. When her own Olympic committee knew they were sending a man to the women's para-athletics... 🤔

Yes all of this !!!

DenmarkStreet · 13/08/2024 16:11

How many other 50 year olds has qualified in athletics in either the Olympics or the Paralympics?

WallaceinAnderland · 13/08/2024 16:21

Maybe the BBC have finally realised that public opinion is very much against males in female sport.

CorruptedCauldron · 13/08/2024 16:30

It’s actually a really sad state of affairs that any individual, in order to feel comfortable in their own skin, wants to take medication that weakens them and makes them unwell. Medicine and surgery is supposed to heal people, not cause harm.

FrillyKnickersAndNoFurCoat · 13/08/2024 16:39

My DH has his testosterone blocked because of prostate cancer. Her has all of the above symptoms +++
However he's still really strong vs most other men.
Just blocking testosterone does not a woman make.
Males who have gone through puberty should not be taking part in women's sports.

Cambiarenome · 13/08/2024 17:05

Changed my name for this as it's personal and local to me! Any sympathy I had for Petrillo vanished when they started insisting on changing and showering with the girls in the athletics club despite being offered a separate space. In earlier interviews P admitted to having an advantage over female competitors but lately that seems to have been conveniently forgotten...

Absolutely!

Toseland · 13/08/2024 23:03

Petrillo has said that his transgender identity began after stealing underwear and clothing belonging to other women, including his mother.
They should make this an offence.

SkiingIsHeaven · 13/08/2024 23:06

If I identify as blind can I have a go at being an Olympian?

DisappearingGirl · 13/08/2024 23:58

The "we don't know the science" thing annoys me.

It's like saying "we don't know if males with ginger hair have an advantage over females" or "we don't know if males with bushy eyebrows have an advantage over females".

334bu · 02/09/2024 08:01

Article has been updated today but I am not sure if anything has changed. Love the bit at end where it states that World Athletics chose fairness for their exclusion of male athletes in the female category whereas the Paralympics chose inclusion and now have a male 50 year old athlete competing against young women .

rollypanda · 03/09/2024 16:22

Of course not, you're a woman.
