What proportion of those identifying as non-binary are women and girls - does anyone know?

I believe it is the vast majority - clearly there are the Sam Smiths of this world, but otherwise every non-binary person I hear about, whether celebrity or friend's child, seems to be female.

What do others think? And I'm guessing there aren't any stats on this...

Most I would have thought. I don't know of any stats - the problem I have with most guesstimates of the TQwhatever numbers is that surveys tend to focus on adults (understandably) which completely excludes all the children affected. They were counted in the UK when registered with or on the waiting list for GIDS but otherwise we relied on horror stories from the front lines. I'd like to see some rigorous research in schools on these various identities and the corresponding mental health issues and social difficulties.

I know two non binary people, one male and one female. One is a freelance fine artist without much of an income. One has a senior role with an income twice the national average. Have a guess which the male one is.

I personally know three non binary people - two females in their 20s and one male aged over 50.

I know four people who identify as NB.
All female. All autistic.

FirstFallopians · 10/08/2024 12:15

I know 3- all female and neurodiverse.

Truthlikeness · 10/08/2024 17:56

I know very slightly more females than males, but it's not a huge difference.

Only anecdata I appreciate, but I identify as non-binary (and I'm biologically female) but out of the other non-binary people I know it's a pretty even split.

That said, there's four or five people where I couldn't guess either way, so that could make a difference when it comes to my own anecdotal statistic.

I wondered whether women are identifying as non-binary rather than trans due to the challenge of being female born but operating in male environments.

StickItInTheFamilyAlbum · 10/08/2024 20:35

All of the under-20-year-old NBs that I know are female.

The NBs in their 20s are an even split.

The ones in their 30s and beyond are female.

My child’s school has a nonbinary boarding dormitory. I was horrified, but it’s ok because they’re all girls

RhinestoneCowgirl · 10/08/2024 20:40

I have noticed that in DS(18) group of friends he uses male pronouns for his male friends but all the young women are 'they', which I'm guessing means NB?

This feels very significant.... and makes me rather sad
