UK media reporting on BBC ignoring risk of gender identity

Most recent is telegraph reporting that BBC not reporting in adequate detail (bbc don’t mention gender at all) the boxer with XY chromosomes participating in female boxing this olympics

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/olympics/2024/08/01/bbc-fails-show-fight-imane-khelif-gender-paris-2024/

other publications also picked up on bbc not reporting WPATH files.

how long will the bbc be allowed to omit key stories relating to gender identity and keep access to the tv licence fee? This goes beyond biased reporting - readers are not being made aware of the issue at all.

how long do we tolerate this from the U.K. national broadcaster? It is no longer fit for purpose.

Olympics viewers left in dark by Eurosport and BBC failure to reference boxing gender row

Italian Angela Carini abandoned fight after 46 seconds with suspected broken nose and is believed to have complained: ‘It’s not right’

It's more than a little interesting to the point of galling that there are so many posters constructing false polarities such as "‘they’re filthy male cheats" on a subforum where there have been many threads and posts explaining nuances of VSDs etc.

Bunbury is pondering on the difference between authentic or espoused desire for information and the Venn diagram of an enquiring mind to take it in.

StickItInTheFamilyAlbum · 03/08/2024 10:51

A disingenuous piece in many ways but does at least make a plea for facts.

In a newspaper that has led the disinformation and got rid of journalists who wanted to write about reality and facts in this area.

ETA: if only the Guardian had retained Hadley, Suzanne et al. Or ever chosen to ask Helen Joyce to write for them.

duc748 · 03/08/2024 11:27

That Guardian piece is terribly written, quite apart from anything else.

No one knows if she, like Mboma, is what elite sport calls a DSD athlete, which means a person with a different, less linear personal biology, that may convey certain performance advantages.

So that's what a DSD means? Thanks for clarifying that for your readers, Barney! And then, you seem to dissolve completely into word salad at the end.

At which point, well, here comes everybody. Here comes the startling ineptitude and tardiness of the IOC in addressing this issue. Here come stampeding online hordes, opportunist politicians looking for a piñata to thwack. Here comes a misunderstanding of the facts, pre-cooked argument looking for its nail which is always the same nail.

duc748 · 03/08/2024 11:29

The job of journalists, Barney, is not to say, woe is me, there's a lot of confusion and obfuscation going on out there, the job to to cut through that bullshit to the facts and make them clear for your readers.

LadyHester · 03/08/2024 11:54

I agree with the above but it does look as though the IBA may have been less than transparent and the IOC deliberately obfuscatory.
I for one am finding it hard to find any journalist able to state on good authority that the boxers have a DSD. (Which is what overwhelmingly appears to be the case.)

They can only suggest it because medical records are private (with good reason). The IBA can't say exactly what tests they did or what they found other than in the broadest sense, without falling foul of releasing private medical information.

The IOC absolving themselves of responsibility (deliberately) for sex testing means they can twist, obfuscate and lie to the public.

It's a shit show of the highest order and it will come crashing down at some point.

OvaHere · 03/08/2024 12:04

It bears remembering that we only found out what DSD Semanya has via disclosure in a court case. The IOC were never going to tell us out of public interest and moral obligation to the truth.

duc748 · 03/08/2024 12:09

Indeed, Ova. As you say, its a shitshow.

I have (tried) to read this three times. Even put it through my personal bs translator. Still haven't a clue what the last sentence means. Can vaguely guess the rest if put through a "they drank 3 bottles of wine before writing" translator but it fails for that sentence. Did the cat write it?

KatieTaylorMadeMeDoIt · 03/08/2024 23:40

The BBC is just woeful on this issue. Really poor quality and heavily biased ‘journalism’ that never actually explains the issues in clear, factual terms and gives their audience enough factual information to make up their own minds. Just the obvious pushing of an ideological agenda…and on and on and on it goes.

BBC news online is the worst offender. Reads like a MRA intern has been let loose in the newsroom. Fucking dreadful.

I’ve complained many times, but only ever get a response that makes me want to bash my head against a wall - doesn’t address my concerns, is patronising…and nothing changes.

It’s a sad state of affairs.

I am tired. Let the IOC decide. Stop trial by media. In the meantime, if humans cannot have Sports Day without being transphobic or name-calling it should be cancelled, and everybody has to do normal lessons inside until we can be trusted to behave.

You missed the IOC tweet where they confirmed this case is not a transgender issue then?

The problem is that the IOC doesn’t want to decide. They’re not interested in doing any kind of testing to check whether these boxers are actually female. They just think that if your passport says you’re female, then you’re female, which is pathetic.

And this is nothing to do with trans, so no one is being “transphobic”.

NotNowFGS · 07/08/2024 17:03

Whilst we are on the subject can someone tell Lewis Goodall that we are not right wing nutters. I love him but he is wrong on this and wrong on the gender debate altogether.

Let the IOC decide.

Oh good.

That'll ensure that the integrity of women's sport is protected, won't it?

You’re entirely right, who cares about women’s sports and women in children? The main thing is feelings.

Transphobic

Fascists.
Fascist pigs.
You just don't understand.
It's so unfair!

Etc.

No that's a clearly biased hit piece that fails to mention that khelifs own coach admitted that he has XY chromosomes and "abnormally high" testosterone (ie normal male levels) so I wouldn't trust anything else that article says
