My 12 year old son is stronger than me

I’m what is referred to as a strapping woman, 6 ft 1, 88kg. Reasonably fit.

My 12 year old son is 42kg, 5 ft 2, reasonably fit.

We play a game where we face each other, lock hands and push. He’s beaten me and pushed me back almost every time for the last 3 months, unless I use rat cunning.

Ive been currently reading about the men beating up women in the Olympic boxing. Current TRA line on X is

  1. They are women
  2. Even if they aren’t women, it’s the same weight class so it’s fair
  3. Women and men are physically equal and it’s only because of socialisation that women can be beaten by men.

Well, I repeat, my 12 year old son, nearly half my weight, can beat me in a strength competition. That’s anecdotal, but anyone with half a brain knows that this is the case across the board.

Yeah. Same. My teen son has a teeny waist - could fit into 7 year old trousers width wise. He weighs fuck all. I'm a naturally muscley build, 13 stone and pretty fit. There's no contest.

gaggiagirl · 31/07/2024 07:26

Im a small woman but my 8 year old has been able to lift me off the ground for a while now I can't get over how strong he is compared to me and my daughter.

Zapx · 31/07/2024 07:26

Yes. I used to go to a self defence class. There was a boy there who can along. At just turned twelve I could sometimes win against him at the grappling. About six months later I stood no chance at all! It’s earlier than most people think, and I think a lot of women have no idea how overpowered they’d be by a “boy”.

UpThePankhurst · 31/07/2024 07:27

All of the never ending wangling by men and their supporters about how men aren't really men?

It serves one single purpose.

To permit men to use and abuse women and their resources. That's it. That's all. It's men enabling men to harm women.

Without all the wangling, they could not begin to justify doing something so wrong and they know it.

InvisibleBuffy · 31/07/2024 07:29

Yes, I'm similar. Also tall for a woman and strong. My son has always liked to arm wrestle, even since he was little. He began beating me around 12/13. Interestingly, he hasn't yet beaten his 75 year old grandfather yet, although it looks like that won't be long.
So as a fit woman in my forties, I have less strength than both a 13 year old boy and a 75 year old man. The idea that males and females are in anyway equitable in strength is ludicrous.

BumpyaDaisyevna · 31/07/2024 07:37

Yes. My son is 12 going on 13. He is still a little shorter than me and skinny.

But he is stronger than me - if we have a play wrestle he can push me over easily.

It seems to be around this age that there's quite a change. My son's voice hasn't broken yet and he hasn't got hairy legs and he's still skinny and with a sweet boyish face.

But he's definitely strong!

Ifailed · 31/07/2024 07:38

But if your son put on a dress you'd beat him easily.

Lovelyview · 31/07/2024 07:43

I am ashamed to admit I only appreciated the effect of male puberty when my son went through it. It's an astonishing transformation.

GingerPirate · 31/07/2024 07:43

No.
I'm a 45 yo female,172cm/65 kg, very fit
by necessary physical work and don't have this experience.

Toseland · 31/07/2024 07:44

Yup agreed. My son has been able to lift me up off the floor a few inches (whilst standing) since he turned 12 and if he chose to sit on top of me, I, as a strong-ish, plump-ish, tall, mature woman would be unable to get up!

Kucinghitam · 31/07/2024 07:45

I guess the Righteous would say something like, "You're just not trying hard enough, OP! Women just need to train more!" 🤪

BridasShieldWall · 31/07/2024 07:49

Same here with the pushing competition- gave it up years ago as I lost even with a weight advantage. He is 17 now and it’s been fascinating watching puberty kick in and the nassive jumps in speed and strength that he got. I also have 14 year old twins, one a boy and one a girl. DD used to be faster, naturally better balance but now puberty is kicking in for DS2 he is now faster and stronger even though she is one of the fastest girls on her rugby team.

So tired of this shit around transwomen / trans girls playing female sport and the crap spouted. Just ecasue the transwomen / girl loses occasionally doesn’t mean they don’t have an advantage. I keep reading Ross Tucker on Twitter patiently explaining to idiots why there should be distinction between male and female sex class.

I helped haul my elderly father (80s) up in a hospital bed when he was on oxygen, weak, confused and with low odds of making it through the week. His grip strength was unbelievable. So much greater than I had or will ever have even as a strong healthy woman. It genuinely shocked me.

puffyisgood · 31/07/2024 07:50

pretty standard, per weightlifting world records

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ListofworldrecordsinOlympicweightlifting

the strongest woman who ever lived, Li Wenwen of China, a 150kg (23.5 st) behemoth, has a career best lift of 335kg.

in men's weightlifting this lift has been beaten by a guy in the lightest but two category, by a 5'4" guy who had to weigh in below 67kg (10.5 st).

but for explosive power, as in punching, rather than pure strength (pushing or pulling) the difference between the sexes is much greater.

fwiw, the above records were imo likely set by athletes with some record of steroid abuse. women are widely recognised as responding more strongly to steroids (hence the women's 100m through 800m records all dating back to the 80s when usage was more rife). the difference in strength between regular, unmedicated, men and women is greater still.

I haven’t been able to beat my son (12.5) in a mercy fight for a while. He’s so skinny as well his fingers and like little twigs. I just assumed I’d got my technique all wrong.
I think I could still overpower him just using sheer weight.

Catsmere · 31/07/2024 08:02

I've only done the pushing contest once, against another woman of similar build to me. In that case I lost because I didn't know to stand with one foot braced in front and one back - once I did, I won. Bet it wouldn't have helped against a post-puberty male.

PuttingDownRoots · 31/07/2024 08:08

My DD plays rugby... they separate them into boys and girls at 11 as they recognise the physical differences are becoming a problem.

And honestly, last season, when some of those boys have been bigger than the mums watching... you do wonder if there should be a size limit as well as an age limit. And rugby is purposely trying to hit each other, more of a side result

I was very much caught up in that girl-power! Weakness is all in your head! kind of stuff in the 90s.
It was grip strength stats that snapped me out of it. Women at our strongest (30s-40s) have roughly the grip strength of a man in his 80s. I don't know how I was able to ignore the evidence of my senses for so long, but there you are. The numbers can't be argued with.

Average Grip Strength in Men and Women: The Secrets of Strong Hands

The average grip strength can vary greatly depending on the gender, age, and hand dominance of an individual. Plus, the average grip strength

I have started going to the gym and teenage boys tend to pile in around 4pm after school. Mostly they seem to sit around staring at their phones, but they still have muscle. I assume they just don’t have to work that hard, a few lifts of some heavy weights and they’re good to go. I on the other hand, can’t build any arm muscle no matter how hard I try.

Justme56 · 31/07/2024 09:44

At a very basic level not only do males have bigger muscles but the make up of their muscles differs. Generally they have more high twitch fibers that give the muscle speed and power. However they tire quickly. Low twitch are good for endurance activities. There is obviously a lot more to it but that’s what I remember.

BlackeyedSusan · 31/07/2024 09:51

I had regular practice at lifting and carrying 11 year olds...last lifted and carried my just turned 11 boy but I don't think he was fighting back with all his might...a couple of months later and he was definitely pushing me around and still not using all his force (he had learned to be more careful with me)

This website always gets me

https://boysvswomen.com/#/

I was about to post that too. It's astounding, isn't it, when people try to deny that there's any difference between men and women's bodies at all, when it's so clear from such a young age that teenage male athletes can beat (with a pretty wide margin in many cases) female olympian athletes.

SeeSeeRider · 31/07/2024 10:15

I knew a woman whose 12 year old son started beating her up. He spent years in the youth justice system, and then mental hospitals. Such a sweet boy as well until he didn't get his own way.
