When Nellie Bowles got her dream job as a reporter for the New York Times, she thought she'd never leave her the legacy paper. But what she witnessed behind the scenes gave her a very personal insight into the political capture of the American newsroom. She tells UnHerd's Freddie Sayers about how the disinformation movement, mainstream media bias and finding herself outside the tribe.

Very interesting video exposing the links between disinformation/fake news movement and the authoritarian left. If you don't watch the whole video please watch the section on Wi Spa at 21.48. It describes the trial which I'd not heard before.

Nellie's new book 'Morning after the Revolution' Dispatches from the wrong side of history is out now. It sounds like a really good read.

Not since Joan Didion in her prime has a writer reported from inside a system gone mad with this much style, intelligence and wit ... A perfect book' Caitlin Flanagan

Really enjoyed that. Thank you. It does make me feel like I am not going mad. The Wi Spa was the moment I felt so disconnected with The Guardian that had been like an oracle in my teenage years - here was something that was so obviously untrue it was ‘what have I been reading all these years?’. I am glad my inner common sense was justified and other people picked up on that too. It’s good to see that incident in the wider picture.

Thank you. That was interesting. Lots of comments about the past she admitted to in cancelling other people. It's, imo, a fair criticism but something that needs to be moved past for healing. The WiSpa stuff, CHAZ and antifa stuff is crazy. That the reporting of serious crimes; murders, rapes, get spiked because the perpetrators, or the suspected backgrounds of the perpetrators were...holy?

Wow that Wi Spa section especially on what went on in court. Horrendous details I wasn’t aware of:

  • In trying to discern whether Daniel was showing his genitals with Ill intent the lawyers in court questioned each woman in detail as to whether his penis was flaccid or erect
  • as a result a 14 year old girl had to say to Faniel’s defence attorney that her view of his genitalia (she was apparently the witness he’d chosen to sit opposite and had been given the fullest view) and opinion on whether it was flaccid or erect was all moot because until his actions she had not seen a penis 😢
  • Daniel was an unhoused person and was using the 24 hour spa as a place to sleep that night and he did sleep there after the assault
  • the guardian still has their article up quoting Serano as saying Wi spa was a conspiracy between GC feminists and right wing etc
  • the guardians subsequent article after court revelations did not cover the 14 year old girl’s testimony or acknowledge or withdraw previous article as biased unfactual and misrepresenting- both by same authors !

Rolling my eyes somewhat at her shrugging dismissal that there was ‘nothing wrong with him being in the women's space' because 'it said woman on his driver's licence'. And that there was so much 'complexity'. What, like actual facts?

PriOn1 · 27/07/2024 20:26

There is complexity, because the law has gone mad in the western world, and men are now legally considered to be female. Even when they are not considered to be legally female, they can have official documents with that lie on them.

There is no complexity in the sex of that man, but the legal situation the Spa and other single sex spaces face is indeed complex. I’m not sure if that was what she was referring to, but I thought that might be what she meant.

Yes, I see that, @PriOn1. I just felt she maybe sounded a bit more on the fence about him and his actions, as opposed to his situation, than I’d expected to hear.

There are people who are completely aware of the nonsensical nature of gender beliefs but who still haven't made the connection with the importance of boundaries. "Complex" sometimes means genuinely complex, and sometimes simply "I haven't worked it out yet". I watched the video, and I was intrigued enough to get Bowles' book on Kindle. I thought her frequent hesitancy showed someone who hasn't yet finished thinking things through, so the read could be interesting. It's certainly a mistake to see the world through clear cut blinkers, but that doesn't mean that some things aren't clear cut.

Ooh just bought this book after listening to another podcast (no idea who) but the guy at Waterstones gave me a disapproving look when I picked it up 😂 - I take that as a positive sign
