I thought that someone here might be able to help.

My child (17) identifies as nonbinary and has changed their name to a male name.

My child is intelligent and funny and also autistic.

I had a discussion with them about how I support them etc but that I feel disappointed that it seems that nowadays if you don't fit a certain stereotype of what a girl is then you can't be a girl.

She is surrounded by lesbians and women who are not stereotypical versions of women, including myself.

I asked a lot of questions around why they don't feel they are a woman etc.

They listened carefully and then said they'd like to read about gender and philosophy and think about all this a bit more

Does anyone have any ideas of anything I could recommend ? I don't want anti trans stuff as this will put them off. Just some interesting reading about gender

Thank you for any help

She loves reading so lengthy stuff is fine

You'll probably get better suggestions, but Material Girls by Kathleen Stock is very good. She is very sympathetic to the gender-distressed and does a great job of steel-manning the genderists' arguments, but also very clear about why it is harmful to women and girls. Stock is a philosopher, so her style may be a bit dry for a 17-year-old.

Thank you, dd is a keen philosopher so I will check that. Although she is probably aware of her name and the media surrounding her so might be reluctant to read that

It might be worth amending the thread title to reflect that you are worried about your daughter. Might get more engagement from all the women who've been in your situation.

My entry point was Irreversible Damage by Abigail Shrier. Very readable and doesn't carry Stock's scary name :)
